Gaia's Garden

Even those of us on an Earth centered path can use a little help now and then in caring for our Mother.  This column is dedicated to making us more aware of the "footprints" we leave on Her and how to live more harmoniously with Her even if we're urban pagans.

Unto the Seventh Generation

We are coming into the time of harvests and stewardship of the Earth takes on new meanings at this time of year.  We must decide how much to take from the garden and how much to leave for the animals and even the plants of next year and the year after.  Our yards, gardens, balconies and "green" places are microcosmic representations of the Earth as a whole.

Consider carefully the balance you desire when taking from the green places in your life.  Yes, pruning is necessary, but too much pruning will stunt a plant and may even kill it.  Fertilizing is good, but too much will kill and what kind of fertilizer you use has a direct impact not only on your space, but birds, animals, fish and water far, far away.

If you happen to be graced with a yard or garden, consider leaving an are as "wild".  Your neighbors might not like the rampant growth of grasses, "weeds" and flowers, but the birds, butterflys and small animals will love you for it and grace your whole yard with their presence.  Habitat loss is the greatest threat to all wildlife on the planet, and thence to ourselves.
Please take a few minutes a day and join in teh Race for the Rainforest and the Big Cats Race to help us all preserve some much needed habitat, not only for our generation, but unto the seventh generation and beyond.

                             Mother Bless,
                                     Kara Shima
