Gaia's Garden

Even those of us on an Earth centered path can use a little help now and then in caring for our Mother.  This column is dedicated to making us more aware of the "footprints" we leave on Her and how to live more harmoniously with Her even if we're urban pagans.
Earth Day 1999 takes place on March 20th.  The date was chosen by the founders of Earth Day in light of the fact that the Vernal Equinox was the beginning of a new year in many ancient civilizations.  The theme of this years Earth Day is a new day for the Earth.

At 8:46 pm EST the Peace Bell at the United Nations in New York will ring in celebration of  the beginning of  Spring and of the beginning of Earth Day 1999.  At the same time, 02:46 a.m., on March 21st,  the Peace Bell in Vienna, Austria will also ring.

The press release from the Earth Day Foundation has dedicated this as "One global common moment celebrating life with dedication of heart and mind to think and act as responsible Earth Trustees.  We are one human family and have only one Earth."

As all pagans know, both peace and the care of Earth begins in the mind.  On Earth Day we can think about what we will do restore and renew  life and peace on our planet and also celebrate in our own rituals the rites and wonders of life.  This year, we can do so knowing that there are many others, that while they may not tread the same paths we do, are united in this common goal.
