THE RAINBOW
PASSAGE

The Rainbow Passage provides support for people who have animals diagnosed with terminal or chronic disease, people who have to make a euthanasia decision and people who have lost a treasured family member, an animal companion. In addition, The Rainbow Passage provides a Pet Loss Packet of information for people who wish to better understand the grieving/mourning process.

The terminal diagnosis or death of the family pet can be one of the most traumatic times that a family has to face. This animal is not just the household pet but a treasured family member and a best friend.

Unfortunately, not all of society understands this special relationship and sometimes does not provide the support needed. Grieving for a loved one is natural and normal and must be allowed. The manner and intensity with which a person grieves varies. Reactions will depend on many factors including the person's experience with death.

During this period of loss it is important to acknowledge feelings and to mourn the loss. It is normal to feel confused about your feelings but give yourself time and permission to express and talk about these feelings.
