*Whether the corn was shucked in the barn or in the field, it was shelled by hand, in many areas until the 1950's. Shelling by hand meant feeding it into a hand-turned mill with spikes inside to rub the corn off the cob. In the best designed models the corn fell below while the cob was ejected from the side.
*A corn sheller is used to remove the corn kernels from the cob. When the dry ears of corn grate against the teeth of the round shelling gear, the kernels separate from the cob. Shelled corn is fed to the chickens, ducks, geese, and other animals, and is used as seed for the new corn crop.
