The 3 Orange Whip’s second CD, It’s Mirrorballs, is an improvement on their first release, Ladies And Gentlemen, but is still a disappointment in some ways. While the sound is notably cleaner and polished, the band lacks the power they have on-stage. In particular, James McDonald’s guitar sound is too thin. Nevertheless, Dan Durack’s singing is great and his songwriting continues to rapidly improve.
The lead track, TinaRockArena, is the atypical Whips song with its catchy riff and lyrics about the band being rock arena wannabes! (although it should be noted that the band’s sound owes just as much to the Australian pub rock tradition of bands like The Celibate Rifles and The Onyas than it does to bands like The Who and Black Sabbath) Other highlights include Lancelin, with its memorable intro and the hard rocking Laughing.
There’s no denying that the 3 Orange Whips have some great songs. Hopefully, as they continue to improve and refine their sound in the studio, their next recording will be something to behold.
