Splinta aren’t your traditional Perth power pop band. Instead these guys follow a similar approach to bands like The Muffs, Ratcat and (dare I say it) Oasis, rather than say The Stems or Hoodoo Gurus. Their second EP, Money Or The Box, which was produced by Toni Italiano is a bit of a hit and miss affair. Whilst frontman Steve Mancini is a good guitarist, his singing needs some work and the band are let down by the stop-start progressions that characterise many of their songs. I can’t help but feel that they would be better served by following their instincts and going for a more straight ahead approach as best exemplified in the Real Kids-ish We’re Not The Same and Doesn’t Matter Anyway, this CD’s strongest tracks.
