Heckler and Koch G-11

The HK G-11 with an aftermarket optical scope and fixed bayonet
This rifle, developed by Heckler and Koch in the late 1980's, was the first modern arm to use caseless ammunition.

The G-11, like similar modern designs, has a scope built into the carrying handle.  The rifle was unique becuase of its rotating chamber.  After a round was loaded and fired, the chamber (seen behind the trigger guard) rotates 90 degrees to load the next round.

The G11 was tested by the US Army during the ACR program, but not adopted.  The Army did, however, choose another HK rifle to be the platform for the adopted ACR.
The HK G-11 production model
In 1990, by order of the Federal Republic of Germany's Ministry of Defense, the HK G11 was adopted for use by the West German Army.  However, the sudden re-unification of the two Germanys diverted the 2.7 million DeutchMarks intended to pay for G11 production into the re-organization of a single army.  The united German Army is currently using the HK G-3 series rifles.  Whether or not they will re-adopt the G11 or new G36 remains to be seen.
