I don't think one ton is out of the question. The world record bench press is almost 700 lbs. The world record clean and jerk is almost 600 pounds. Remember Cap was given the ultimate steroid. I think he could manage a ton (in the bench anyway) Maybe he'd have to lift his ass from the bench to do it,maybe it would't be with a pause at the bottom
but caps could do it.

Exactly, if the world record is 700 pounds that is pretty much human max, then 800 sounds just fine. No more, maybe in intense adrenalin situation once every 5 years 1000 pounds, but a ton is more than twice his ordinary strength. Remember he still moves around like a cat, 800 is just fine.

Yeah, his chain-breaking and bar-bending feats can definitely be attributed to adrenaline. Also, gorillas are considered to be strong enough to bend rifle barrels, so maybe adrenaline isn't even needed. Maybe Cap is strong enough to bend bars and such at normal strength with supreme effort.

Marvel's FATE (2043)

Posted by Miguel O'Hara on September 16, 1997 at 10:14:48 PDT

Just heard that Marvel lost another 42 million, and that they will likely have to declare Chapter 7 bankruptcy, meaning they have to sell off EVERYTHING to pay creditors....

Jim Shooter is rumored to be considering a buyout with the aid of Mile High Comics. An excerpt from the news wire follows. Apparently this Tuesday Marvel's fate will be decided!

...Our investigations have revealed that there are presently few, if any, other bidders for the Marvel Publishing unit. Unless the bankruptcy court sets aside a process initiated by Ronald Perelman to shift the licensing rights to all the Marvel Characters from Marvel to a shell company, there seems to be no interest in operating Marvel as a publisher. Outside bidders are far more interested in the individual character rights than the actual publishing company. The common perception seems to be that a company that has seen volume declines of 75% in the past four years isn't worth saving... That's why Chuck Rozanski, the owner of Mile High Comics, has agreed to join with his long-time friend Jim Shooter, to raise the money to purchase the company. The funds are potentially available. Making the deal happen will simply require the right set of circumstances to transpire."

This tip wasn't mine The Living Brain post it on the Spider-man Message board

I was just wondering How Company do you think will take over Marvel characters?

What's going to happened with our favorite comics?

Will DC take over Marvel?

Will they do a good work With Spider-Man, Thunderbolts, Captain America, Hulk, Avenger, Thor, and all the others?

Is this the Clone saga fault?

Or is this the fault of the Peter Parker fans that Want so bad for Peter to Come back that Scared all Ben's Fans, The worse part is none is going to get what they want…

can anyone help me? (2045)

Posted by Matthew Captain America Adamic on September 16, 1997 at 11:46:14 PDT

i have a flag football intramural team called "captain America and the superpatriots." i want to find some pictures of cap charging forward with his shield forward, and his other hand by his side, similar to the cover of avengers 4. i want to put a football in his hand. charging behind him, i want a football squad, decked out in like superpatriot. i'm planning on putting cap's shield on one sleeve, and sp's star on the other. i think i'll put an eagle on the front as the "pocket logo."

here's the problem: i need the clip art. i downloaded some pictures of cap from the cap website, but i still need pix of a football, a football team, superpatriot, and maybe even more of cap. does anyone have any of this? perhaps you could tell me where to go on the net, scan it if it's a hard copy, and e-mail it to me, at "madamic@mail.smu.edu." any help you can give would be very greatly appreciated. thanx. cap.

Gaining weight will do that to you... And I wasn't the only one in that picture. The other guy was my good buddy Jason Ash. Hint... he's the thin one.

So how many shields would I give it? Depends...

Liefeld Shields: 4 shields. The art was somewhat consistent. The only major bad point was the sudden change from the flashback to the current. It was kinda confusing. And that farm scene was straight out of Kingdom Come. Not as much a Cap Clone as I had feared it would be. Oh, yeah, it was a Liefeld Cap Clone, but it wasn't a REAL Cap Clone.

Waid Shields: 0.5 shields. Plotting was horrible, art was inconsistent (as compared to Garney's art). Historical inaccuriates (Russians wearing German clothes, wrong color on bottom of American flag, and so on...). Badly proportioned. Extremely basic plot.

Since I prefer Waid's writing, I'd have to go with 0.5 shields.

Latest word, as of early this morning, is that Carl Icahn has reached an tentative agreement with Chase Manhattan Bank (Marvel's largest debt holder) to buy the debt from Chase, making Carl the effective owner of Marvel. Not sure how the stockholders play into all those, though! This was apparently enough to placate the judge from enforcing a Chapter 7 liquidation of Marvel.

Liefeld's FA IS a rip-off of Cap America. Yeah, there used to be a Kirby-Simon character called Fighting America, but that FA didn't have a shield, and he had a different costume (I believe he wore a hood). This one looks more like Captain America than the Kirby-Simon Fighting American. And if you'll look closely, you can see where the scenes are redrawn (to make Cap into FA).

The last time I was 160 pounds it was in the stone ages, back when I attended high schol. I'd been holding at a steady 175 lbs, but now I'm probably 185 or so. *sigh*

I read FA in the comic store and hated it. The art was bad. Rob couldn't get it straight which arm the shield was on. It teleported many times. There were times he looked 6'3, 250 lbs and the next he looked 5'10 and 300lbs (squatter and wider). Perportionally, this guy was all over the map.
As far as the writing went, well that's my point, it didn't go anywhere. It was all a disjointed mass of battle scenes and one liners not to mention a blatent attempt to cash in on the Spice Girls coat-tails. Thet is not quality.
My next point is that Rob in no way was a scape goat. HE DIDN'T GET ENOUGH SALES. HE DIDN'T GET ENOUGH FANS. WHY? BECAUSE IT WAS ALL BAD.
1 He had Cap's origin intwined with a conspiracy and cover up.
2. He had green blood that healed people when ingested.
3. He put a stupid bird on his head (as if Rob wasn't $#!+ing on him enough to begin with).
4. He had green blood that healed people when ingested!
5. His artwork was all out of whack and hisMaster Man looked like Cable.
6. HE HAD GREEN BLOOD THAT HEALED PEOPLE WHEN INGESTED!!!
I work for a large computer company. If you put out inferior work, you're fired. A comic company should be no different.
My final point is that naturally someone as immature as Liefeld will want to make his FA look tougher, stronger and better than Cap because his characters have to look like they own the entire sandbox. What he doesn't understand is in protecting the sandbox, his characters wallow in the dirt.
BTW: I don't care if this gets read due to the fact we've argued this enough. I hope the moderator deletes the string cause we're discussing FA yet again.

Don't know why this bothers me, but, it does. And you do this consistantly, stonecold, old boy.

The name of the character is Fighting American, with an "n" on the end. I mean really, the whole country doesn't put on a costume and fight crime.

And I'm not even going to comment on your horrible mis-information.

Cap'n America vs Conan the Barbarian: Anybody remember this crossover? (2072)

Posted by Maestro on September 21, 1997 at 08:30:59 PDT

Hi there!
A few years ago there was a crossover (a Conan issue, don't remember which) where Conan came into the future and while there became the head of a street gang who eventually crossed swords with Cap and his boys. The way I remember it, Cap and Conan went at it one on one and Cap was beaten pretty badly in that matchup. I thought it was pretty impressive by Conan since Cap was supposed to have the strength advantage with his solders serum. Does this mean that Conan is a better warrior than Cap or was Conan actually Stronger ?

Well, not sure what it means. The writer could write it any way they want to, for different reasons. The issue in question, I believe, is an issue of WHAT IF (first series). WHAT IF #12 was about "if CONAN walked the Earth Today," and #43 was a sequel to that. I think it was in #43 -- not positive, though.

By the way, in Avengers #212, a barbarian survived to this time and was killed by police. The grieving widow, after fighting the Avengers with her mystical powers, concluded that Cap was a lot like her warrior husband.

I seem to remember there was a crossover where Conan killed Thor! Don't forget conan is a virtual 'superman' who would probably equal cap. Also he is Cimmerian and probably from slightly stronger genetic stock than modern man. Also while cap has fought lots of battles I guarantee Conan has fought lots more (assuming the comics, novels etc all apply). also remember conan regularly defeated opponents the equivalent of modern super-villains without anything more than a trusty broadsword or battle axe.

Also, Conan is totally ruthless and would show no mercy in any battle. Cap'n on the other hand, is a more honorable type which would work to his disadvantage in any matchup. While Cap'n is accustomed to fighting supervillains and so on, Conan grew up killing dragons, demons and hordes of blood thirsty warriors. I also suspect that Conan can lift a lot more than the 800 lbs or so that is Cap's limit. This is a guy who bent bars and broke heavy steel chains when breaking out of dungeons after all :) . Endurance wise, no contest. Fighting for Cap, is merely a nine to five job. For Conan, it was the difference between life and death every day of his life.
