Policies and Procedures
It is the philosophy of Varney Grade School to provide nonbiased educational opportunities for all the students regardless of sex, race, or religious affiliation, that enable them to grow and develop academically, socially, physically, emotionally, and morally toward their fullest potential. We recognize that education is more than knowledge. It is the process by which students acquire proper habits, attitudes, understanding, and skills to function effectively as more mature human beings.
Our curriculum provides opportunities for personal growth and aids the student in developing a sensitivity to the feelings, needs, and rights of peers and adults.
In keeping with the democratic value of worth and dignity of all individuals we believe that it is the obligation of those who work with children to accept them as they come to us and adapt our curriculum to their needs.
It is our objective for students to leave Varney Grade School with the attitudes, habits, and skills that will be useful throughout their entire lives. It is our aim to hold children to be good citizens who can function to their highest potential in our society.
It is our feelings that the parents have the most influence on the child. Hence the parents should be constructively involved in the child's education. The parents are informed on a continuous basis of the progress of the child and encouraged to actively participate as a parent volunteer. Parents who are genuinely interested in their child's education usually have children who are also interested in it.
Visitors
All visitors are welcome to Varney Grade School. However, all visitors must come to the office before visiting classrooms. We are sure that as parents you want us to supervise your children and to maintain their health and safety. Reporting to the office helps us to know who is visiting in the building and their reason for being there. We ask your assistance in this supervision by coming to the office first upon entering the school.
Attendance
It is well established that success in school depends upon regular attendance. If a student is not in school, they cannot be taught. If a student is absent due to illness or other valid reasons, a doctor's excuse or a note to the teacher stating the reason for absence is required.
Make-up work is permitted when students are absent. However, the student should go to the teacher for make-up work immediately upon returning to school following an absence. Sufficient
time to complete assignments missed while absent will be allowed. When make-up work is not complete the student will receive a zero for that assignment.
Students who are absent in excess of twenty days unexcused will be retained.
All provisions of Mingo County Schools Attendance Policy #1101.00 adopted Oct. 1998 are in effect.
