Fire In the Kitchen- Put a lid on it Thousands of people are seriously injured every year by cooking fires. The National S.A.F.E. Home Foundation, Inc. suggests you keep your kitchen fire-safe and know what to do if a fire does start. Keep cooking surfaces clean so grease can't build up and start a fire. Never leave cooking unattended. If a fire starts in a pan on the stovetop, slide the pan's lid or a larger pan on top to smother the fire. If it's in the oven, turn off the heat and keep the oven door closed. Or you can use a fire extinguisher if you have one and know how to use it. If the fire's too big, don't try to fight it. Leave the house right away and call the fire department from a neighbor's phone. Burn trauma has remained one of the nation's leading causes of death, disability, and disfigurement in children. The scars, physical and psychological, often last a lifetime. Fire and burns are still the second leading cause of accidental death for children under 5 years old. Most children that are killed by fires (90%) are in home without working smoke alarms (dead batteries, etc.). This is almost 3 children every day that might have been saved by properly maintained smoke alarms in their home. We can help do everything possible to establish successful smoke alarm giveaway programs for families and children in urban and rural communities in your area. You can join us in a community partnership to prevent unnecessary tragedy and suffering. The National S.A.F.E. (Smoke Alarms For Every) Home Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) public charity, dedicated to helping fire and public Safety educators reduce the number of preventable deaths and injuries due to the tragedy of fire. The Foundation provides managerial support, guidance in developing and implementing smoke alarm giveaway programs, assistance in acquiring corporate contributions, networking and fundraising ideas, and discounted smoke alarms.
