Our Matinee Idol

Here's my review for April 26th, 1999 at the Myer Horowitz
in Edmonton, Alberta. The concert was held at a University.

I've been to many concerts but nothing compares to Rufus
Wainwright's. To me, he is the epitome of entertainment, and anybody else that has seen
him must agree. He came on stage wearing a green sweater and infamous pink
pants and his hair...like no one else's. He said hello to the crowd
and performed 'Danny Boy'. I knew I wouldn't want to forget anything so I
found a pen and some paper and wrote down some details and the song order.

First, as I said before he sang 'Danny Boy', then 'Matinee Idol'. Before he
played his next song, 'Damned Ladies' he said:"Fasten your seatbelts, we're
gonna sing about some opera singers". After the song he stated that there
were at least twenty stories in that song and expected the crowd to know all
of them and to write a paper on it for the following week. "That's your
homework" he said. "Shit, I have to be in Edmonton next week to grade
the papers." Rufus then sang California, a new song, then (in my
opinion) the sassy and playful song In My Arms. Then April Fool's,
The Greek Song (about his relationship with a Greek boy) Baby, Millbrook,
Cowboy in his words "sad, long, dramatic, all the things we love about [Rufus]",
Barcelona. Them someone from the crowd yelled out a request being
Heartburn. Rufus tried his best but mid-song he messed up "FUCK! I
always fuck up at that part."

Now I do believe the encores were Foolish Love and Sally Ann. I
can't remember. But that was pretty good, agree?
