Rufus Wainwright, fresh from his Juno win for Best Alternative Album,
began his North American tour in Ottawa at Barrymore's. Imogen Heap
was first to the stage, mesmerizing the audience with her beautiful
voice and harmonious ballads. It was not until Rufus had taken the
stage did energy at the sold out show pick up. Playing his own self
professed style of "popera", he captivated the audience from the
opening chords of Danny Boy to the final lyrics of Sally Ann. With
new band in tow, and this being the opening night of tour there were
a few technical problems that plagued the star throughout the night.
Rufus discovered that not only was his guitar out of tune but also
his piano was in the wrong key of the rest of the band and himself.
It was his humour and intensity between sets that kept the audience
pleased. Aside from the technical problems the show on a whole was
excellent. As an added bonus, Rufus had introduced several new songs
to the audience, California and Rainbow Crossing, as well as doing
playing an Irish folk song with a local family friend. It was just
too bad that many of the younger fans in Ottawa, yet again missed an
opportunity to see Rufus Wainwright live, the show not being all
ages. The intensity and passion put forth by Rufus Wainwright and
his band did not go unnoticed by the satisfied crowd in Ottawa
enjoying a wonderful show.
