Our Matinee Idol

~~~
Dressed in Brown boots, tight snake-skin pants, an orange and yellow
plaid shirt, white jacket and broach, Rufus Wainwright entered the stage at
Chicago's Park West and swept the crowd into the lush, romantic, sometimes sad,
opera that is his world. On March 27th, Rufus came packing a lot of passionate
fury within his small frame. He moved the crowd with such beautiful songs as In My Arms,
Baby and Barcelona. Then, turned the tables and pounded out the vibrating
melodies of April Fool's, Beauty Mark and Matinee Idol.
~~~
Rufus had a presence that was serious when the moment called for it and
lively for the remainder of the time. The word that comes to mind when I think
of my initial impression of Rufus at Park West...charming. "I was looking out into the
crowd and saw these waitresses walking around with candles on their trays. I was
thinking that there was a little lighter action going on. Maybe later." Rufus quipped
as he finished a song.
~~~
His entire mood through out the evening was humorous and open.
I felt as if I was gathered around the piano in his living room with an intimate
group of people, rather then at a show in the middle of Chicago. He is a man
who is not afraid to get close to his audience. He grabs you with his music and kisses you
gently with polite conversation that is as frank as it is honest. He is a true
entertainer.
~~~
"Get your lighter's ready!" Rufus remarked as he came back onto the
stage for his final encore. And as I rolled my lighter around the fold of my
palm, I couldn't help but think that the flicker of that tiny Bic, couldn't do
justice to the tremendous light that Rufus Wainwright had created within me. If
there is anything I walked away with after the Park West show, it would have
to be that the love that Rufus fan's have for this extraordinary man is
anything but imaginary.
