Our Matinee Idol

~~~
On March 3, 1999, Rufus Wainwright played to an entergetic crowd at the Supperclub in New York City. Imogen Heap opened for Rufus. Although the bar was quite loud, she managed to sound wonderful, offering charming comments to the audience. The crowd hushed quickly when Rufus took the stage. After scanning the large crowd and uttering "Holy shit!" he took his seat at his piano and launched into "Danny Boy," with his new back up band. The band sounded great behind Rufus. The mix of the drums and bass added a fuller sound to the music. Rufus Wainwright proved himself to be the funny, self-depricating, charismatic person that his fans are so fond of. His introductions and side comments kept the audience laughing between songs. Half of the concert Rufus spent playing his piano, and the other half he spent on guitar. His sister Martha joined him on a few songs as back-up vocalist. He introduced two new songs; "California" ("This song is really new-like two years old."), and a song about Norse gods. Halfway through the song about Norse gods, Rufus became frustrated with the difficult piano part and skipped to the bridge. The highlights of the show were "In My Arms," "Sally Ann," "Danny Boy," and "April Fools." "In My Arms" and "Sally Ann" sounded especially beautiful when played live. The surprise encore came when Rufus returned with father Loudon Wainwright III. "I can’t believe I had to get my hand stamped at my own kid’s show!" remarked Loudon. Martha accompanied Loudon and Rufus singing one of Loudon’s songs. Rufus Wainwright is an incredible live act to see. His beautiful vocal talents are even more apparent than on the album, and his humour is sure to make the concert fun for everyone who attends. Full Play List:
