(FILMOGRAPHY)
Everything you wanted to know about Winona Ryder's movie career.
SQUARE DANCE-[1986]-Good movie about Gemma (Ryder), a 13 year old girl who is disenchanted living on her Texas farm. Soon her mother arrives for a short reunion, and Gemma decides to go to Fort Worth to live with her.
Also stars ROB LOWE, JANE ALEXANDER, and JASON ROBARDS.
LUCAS-[1986]-To my dismay, and I'm sure to yours as well, Ms. Ryder isn't in this movie much. She plays the ignored girl in love with the lead character, Lucas. She's in it for about 20 minutes, but the movie itself is still very entertaining.
Also stars COREY HAIM, KERRI GREEN, and CHARLIE SHEEN.
BEETLEJUICE-[1988]-The movie who brought Ms. Ryder from obscurity and introduced her to the world. She plays Lydia, depressed daughter. Excellent movie wonderfully directed by the best director in the business, Tim Burton. If you haven't seen it, you owe it to yourself to do so.
Also stars ALEC BALDWIN, GEENA DAVIS, and MICHAEL KEATON. Not to mention DICK CAVETT.
1969-[1988]-Yet another movie attempting to caputure the feeling of the late sixties. But this one cashes in. A good movie which also unfortunately lacks in Winona Ryder screen time. But very good nonetheless.
Also stars KEIFER SUTHERLAND, ROBERT DOWNEY, JR., and BRUCE DERN.
HEATHERS-[1989]-The movie to end all movies. Not enough can be said about this gem of modern cinema. Because of this movie I have sworn to name my first born daughter Veronica Sawyer. OK, maybe not. Ms. Ryder's most entertaining movie by far. If you haven't seen it, your life isn't complete.
Also stars SHANNON DOHERTY,and CHRISTIAN SLATER.
GREAT BALLS OF FIRE-[1989]-Another good movie. The late eighties and early 90's were Winona's years. She plays Myra, Jerry Lee Lewis' 13 year old cousin bride. You can't blame his taste. The best of the rock movies in my opinion.
Also stars DENNIS QUAID and ALEC BALDWIN.
WELCOME HOME, ROXY CARMICHAEL-[1990]-An excellent movie that seems to have been overlooked. She plays Dinky Bosetti, a girl searching for her identity by thinking she's the daughter of her hometown celebrity. Very excellent. (Can I say excellent some more?)
Also stars JEFF DANIELS, and DINAH MANOFF.
EDWARD SCISSORHANDS-[December 7,1990]-Could this movie be better? I think not. The second pairing of Ms. Ryder and director extrordnaire, TIM BURTON. Another must see to have a full life.
Also stars JOHNNY DEPP, VINCENT PRICE, and DIANNE WIEST.
MERMAIDS-[December 14,1990]-Hey guess what, this is a great movie. Ms. Ryder plays one of her cutest and juciest characters ever, Charlotte. Ms. Ryder also was nominated for and Oscar for this wonderful performance. A must see.
Also stars CHER, CHRISTINA RICCI, and BOB HOSKINS.
NIGHT ON EARTH-[1991]-I don't know much about this movie except that she is in it for about a half an hour portraying a chain smoking cabbie. Anyone who owns this and is willing to part with it, I would be pleased as punch. E-mail me.
BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA-[November 13,1992]-The beginning of Ms. Ryder's period movies. Very excellent adaptation of my favorite novel of all time. Probably the best Dracula movie made. Ms. Ryder plays Mina Harker.
Also stars ANTHONY HOPKINS, KEANU REEVES, and GARY OLDMAN. Great cast.
THE AGE OF INNOCENCE-[September 17,1993]-Has Martin Scorcese made a bad movie? Yes. I had a hard time staying awake during this but Ms. Ryder is still the main attraction.Need a nap? Rent this.
Also stars MICHELLE PFIFFER, and DANIEL DAY LEWIS.
REALITY BITES-[February 18,1994]-Remember all the movies made around this time to try to recaputure the feeling of the 80's teen movies? Well this one blows them away. Great Movie. Plus Ms. Ryder's character has a great name, Lelaina.
Also stars JANEANE GAROFALO, BEN STILLER, and ETHAN HAWKE.
HOUSE OF THE SPIRITS-[April 1,1994]-The best of Ms. Ryder's "serious" pieces. Adaptation of Isabel Allende's novel. Could use a little more of Ms. Ryder. But very good nonetheless.
Also stars GLENN CLOSE, JEREMY IRONS, and MERYL STREEP. Wow, what a cast.
LITTLE WOMEN-[December 25,1994]-I never thought I would be one to enjoy an adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's classic novel, but this one suprised me. Wonderfully made and acted movie by the entire cast. Give it a try if you're a little judgmental.
Also stars CLAIRE DANES, SUSAN SARANDON, and SAMANTHA MATHIS.
HOW TO MAKE AN AMERICAN QUILT-[October 6,1995]-This movie was another shocker. Ms. Ryder plays Finn, a graduate student spending her summer with her grandmother and great aunt. Great tale about following your heart.
Also stars ELLEN BURSTYN, ANNE BANCROFT,and KATE NELLIGAN.
