Munnar

A misty, lush green hill station up in the Annamalai range of Kerala, Munnar is a tea plantation centre. Tea gardens, some of the highest in the world stretch up the sides of the hills and are interspersed with pockets of forest rich in wildlife. Munnar in fact is like a giant Japanese garden stretching to the end of the horizon and makes an interesting change from coastal, palm fringed Kerala. Adjacent nearly to Anaimudi, the highest peak in South India, Munnar is nearly 1600 metres above sea level. Since the 30 odd tea gardens around Munnar are all privately owned, the majority of them by Tata Tea, the town itself is beautifully maintained. A colonial town, clean and neat and brightly painted, it has its own charm.

Location: In the Ananmalai Hills 1520 metres above sea level

Climate: Very heavy monsoons from June to September. Annual rainfall 270cm

When to go: Munnar is a pleasantly cool and refreshing place to visit at most times of year. Winters are cooold! And during monsoon days the downpour is steady.

Dress sense: Take plenty of warm clothes. A suit if you are staying at the club!

Getting there: By road. Kottayam is 148 kilometres away. The nearest airport is at Madurai.

Where To Stay : Munnar being a very small place has a very few hotels. These are The East End Edissary , The Regency , & Sterling Resorts
Of the above I would Personally recommend The East End Edissary since it has decently furnished rooms and a multi cuisine restaurant.

The hotel rooms are moderately priced ranging from Rs.600 to Rs.1200
Sterling Resorts ,situated about 15 Kms. from Munnar , is recomended only if you have your own vehicle .

What to see :

One thing that should be remembered is that all the hotels in Munnar observe very strict resturant timings , and no food is served , even to resident guests ,at other times.
