The following guidelines are from the Ottawa Branch

We are seeking volunteers to contribute to this transcription. There are two roles for which volunteers are being sought:

Transcribers
Read the original hand written census documents, either directly from the microfilm at the National Archives or other library, or from the digital images which are available at the National Archives web site. The transcriber enters the data into a spreadsheet program, such as MsExcel, MsWorks, QuattroPro, or Lotus using a template. Guidelines on how to transcribe are available here.

Proofreaders
Compare a printed version of the transcription against the original hand written census documents on microfilm at the National Archives or other library or against the digital images on the web to minimize errors in the final product. Guidelines on how to proofread are available here.

The current status of the project, indicating which tasks are still available, and providing an easy way to volunteer, is shown below.
