Dear Pop,

Whew! What an adventure! And I was stuck right in themiddle of it, in a coma! Just like everybody else aboard, except the admiral and the captain.

Seems this fake Professor Multiple, who=d given us a really fine puppet show, took over the boat-with life size puppets who looked and acted just like us, sort of.

They wanted the boat to house their master machine. Sort of like a hermit crab. This machine thing from outer space needed a new shell after it=s own disintigrated in our atmosphere. And Multiple was a puppet too!

Anyway, the skipper and the admrial managed to destroy the weird thing but the skip got kinda busted up.

Then we all woke up after it was all over, sure wish I could have been in on it. But the skipper=s released the video and audio security tapes, so we=ll have an idea.

To continue, well, the skipper got busted up trying to rescue the admiral, and the admiral got busted up trying to use the lazer. The skipper had to pretend to be a puppet too! So he got hurt when he was trying to help the admiral who was out in the flying sub to get out of the weird machine thing. Well, the puppet whacked him about a lot. But he tricked them and managed to nuke the hull and Seaview rammed the thing, destroying it. So when Multiple and his fellow puppets Adied@, we all woke up. Honest!\

You might just be able to see something on TV about it all. Some reporter heard about our little adventure and wants the admiral to have an interview along with the evidence. Ya know, this time, I think the admiral just may respond!

Well, see ya.

I feel like a complete idiot! I should have known better, especially having been with Nelson and Seaview this long.

Well, the admiral was NOT crazy. There was indeed a >flying Dutchman= , a ship doomed to roam the sea endlessly, and Van Wyck, her master. It was he who caused the loss of the vessels and nearly Nelson and Seaview as well.

Only someone who=d come to Van Wyck=s island, and pull the dagger from the skeleton of the curse giver, a man Van Wyck killed centuries ago, could transfer the curse to someone else. The someone else chosen was Nelson.

Van Wyck=s plan almost worked but not quite. He was disposed of himself when we destroyed the island, saving Nelson and Seaview from any curse, knock on wood.

Maybe they=ll make a tv show or movie about it!

*89*

SSRN SEAVIEW

Dear Pop,

Whew! And I thought a chewing out by the admiral was bad!Cheesh! The skipper didn=t exactly yell, but his eyes could have melted Titanium! And the chief claims he could feel the bulkheads sizzling while the skipper took me to task.

It was all my fault, Pop. I was stupid and acted on impulse, something you just don=t do on a sub, well not much anyway.

We had a radiation leak in the missile silo, so I tried to open the inspection hatch. I really didn=t give much thought to the seal in place.

Well then it all started to happen. We all start having hallucinations and then the thing activates itself and we couldn=t deactivate or even fire it away.

Finally the fail-safe opens and we were able to fire it away that way. Boom! And a big one at that!

So, I=m stuck with extra duty, >nite watches, and no shore leave. And I know I deserve it. But what really irks me is that I let the skipper down. So far the admiral hasn=t ordered me to his cabin, but if he does I may find myself on permenent shore leave.

Sometimes I could ring the necks of certain people/ Without even a by yourleave, we were sadled with a device of unbelievable power and ordered to Cook Island to deliver it.

Then it happened. Kowalski, unbidden, and on his own initiative, tried to open the silo=s SEALED inspection hatch!

We were then subjected to mass hallucinations, explosions, and >invisible= crewmen.

That we=re still alive is remarkable, thanks to the president accessing our situation from afar and realeasing the fail-safe for a second or so, so we could get rid of the thing.

Washington=s not too upset. After all, it exploded at the coordinates. But I=m fuming.Putting us all at risk with a weapon that should have never been invented. Treating us like a child=s toy boat! Politicians!

*

ssrn seaview

captain=s log

Mission accomplished, with difficulty.

I=m working a full report for Washington, but briefly, the weapon in Silo 4 went bananas, primarily due to Kowalski=s tampering with the seal!

Electrical and mechanical problems are one thing, but mass hallucinations are another. How do you right mangled minds?

In addition, we could not fire it off nor disarm it. We were stuck with it, a loaded gun of incredible power.

Fortuanately, Washington had been monitoring the malfunction and the president ordered fail-safe opened just long enough for us to fire it off.

The explosive power of this weapon was beyond descripton. I still have no idea how the old girl managed to hold together.

I am very upset with Kowalski and have told him so. I just can=t understand why he took it upon himself to try to >fix things=. Well, maybe I can, but his action showed incredibly bad judgement, something he=s never shown before.

A seal is a seal for a reason! Though why Washington would load us with this monster weapon without telling us anything about it or it=s toxic effects shows their bad judgement as well.

It remains to be seen if Kowalski will be dismissed from Seaview and NIMR, though I=ve said my peace with the admiral. In spite of everything, Ski has a proven track record, is loyal, and just about the best crewman I have aboard. He=s got the loyalty of his shipmates and is somewhat of a leader. I have considered officer canidate school for him in the past, but now will have to reconsider. Chip and I will have to talk about it and the admiral will have the final say. Of course, if we did recommend it to him, he might not want it.

CRANE HAD QICKLY RESPONDED TO OUR SUDDEN DISTRESS CALL AND WAS ABOARD IN MINUTES, ON AN APPARENTLY DESTERTED, IMMOBILE, AND DEAD SHIP. HE WAS `LURED` TO THE SPIRAL STAIRS WHEN THE ACCORDIAN DOORS HAD CLOSED, AND THE FLYING SUB HATCH LOCKED ALL BY THEMSELVES.

THAT`S HOW THEY GOT HIM. WHEN HE TOUCHED THE STAIRS HE WAS JOLTED WITH THEIR MIND ALTERING FORCES. WHEN HE AWOKE, HE SAW AND EMPTY BUT WORKING SHIP, COMPLETE WITH `OUR` DISEMBODIED VOICES, COURTESY OF OUR ALIENS AND OUR OWN TAPES.

`JIM BENTLEY`, OUR PRIME ALIEN, DISGUISED AS A HUMAN, SHOT AT LEE BUT CRANE OVERPOWERED HIM. `BENTLEY` CLAIMED TO BE A UFO EXPERT ABOARD, BUT CRANE WAS FURIOUS. YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN HIM! ANYWAY, `BENTLEY` ESCAPED CRANE=`S GRASP AND RAN UP THE STAIRS. YOU GUESSED IT. NO FORCE FIELD NOW. SO CRANE FOLLOWED. HEARING MY VOICE LAUGHING, LEE WAS ALMOST HURT BY A SMALL DECK EXPLOSIVE.

AT THE TIME, THOUGH THINGS LOOKED PRETTY HOPELESS TO US, IT WAS REASSURING TO SEE AND HEAR CRANE ON THE MIKE,`GOING TO FIND OUT` WHAT WAS GOING ON.

AFTER CRANE WAS ZAPPED AGAIN BY A VENT SHAFT, `BENTLEY=`S VOICE TOLD HIM HE, CRANE, WAS GOING TO DIE AND `MY` VOICE KEPT LAUGHING ON THE PA, SO LEE SHOT IT. SCRATCH ONE PA SPEAKER.

NOW CRANE FOUND A `DEAD` `BENTLEY` IN THE ESCAPE HATCH AND `PATTERSON`, A HALLUCINATION WITH MASS. `PATTERSON` TRIED TO KILL HIM AND MORE DISEMBODIED VOICES WERE HEARD AND THEN THE MISSILES BEGAN TO ACTIVATE. `PATTERSON` WAS GUNNED DOWN BY `ME`, AND `I` SHOT LEE IN THE SHOULDER. THESE HALLUCINATIONS WERE COMPLETE WITH MASS AND PAIN, LEE ASSURES ME NOW.

BACK TO THE STORY. AFTER `I` CAPTURED CRANE AFTER A BOUT OF `CAT AND MOUSE`, `WE` THE `MEN OF SEAVIEW` HELD AN IMPROMPTU COURT MARTIAL OF CRANE, IN WHICH `WE` LABLED HIM A TRAITOR TO `US`!

NOW LEE WAS CERTAIN THAT `WE` WEREN`=T WHO `WE` CLAIMED TO BE AND WAS UTTERLY DEFIANT! THEN `WE` DEPARTED TO GET THE MISSILES READY FOR LAUNCH TO WASHINGTON! CRANE MANAGED TO KNOCK OUT `KOWALSKI`, HIS GUARD, AND RAN TO THE CIRCUITRY ROOM, WHERE HE FOUND THE SPECIAL WEAPONS LOCKER EMPTY. `I` CONFRONTED HIM WITH A SONIC GUN WHICH CAUSED A LITTLE `ROCK AND ROLL` AS WE CALL IT, AND CRANE, FALLEN ON THE DECK, WEAK, `WOUNDED`, EXHUASTED, AND ABOUT TO BE KILLED AT POINT BLANK RANGE, THREW A LIVE WIRE AT `ME` AND `I` BECAME A MASS OF ROBOT WIRING!

BUT LEE STILL HAD TO DEACTIVATE FAIL-SAFE AND COULDN`=T. THE MISSILES FIRED AND `BENTELY` ALIVE AGAIN, AS HE`D ALWAYS BEEN, GLOATED AND ZAPPED CRANE WITH HIS SONIC GUN. `BENTLEY` KEPT GLOATING AS CRANE TRIED THE SELF DESTRUCT, WHICH DIDN`T WORK.

BUT `BENTELY` UNDERESTIMATED OUR GALLANT LAD, FOR LEE OPENED THE CIRCUITRY DOOR AND `BENTLEY` DIDN`T THINK LEE WOULD ACTUALLY RISK ELECTROCUTING HIMSELF BY CLOSING THE CIRCUITS BY HAND. BUT HE DID.

THE MISSILES SELF DESTRUCTED, SEAVIEW WAS TOSSED ABOUT, AND LEE MANAGED TO GET `BENTELY`=S DESTRUCT DEVISE AND USED IT ON `BENTLEY`.

INSTANTLY, OUR PRISON, GUARDS, AND FORCE FIELD WERE EVAPORATED AND WE RUSHED UP THE DECKS TO REACH CRANE, NOW IN A STATE OF UTTER EXHAUSTION AND UNCONCIOUS. REMARKABLE REALLY, HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN KILLED.

DOC SAYS THE BURNS ON LEE`S HANDS ARE RELATIVELY MINOR, CONSIDERING LEE`S NEAR BRUSH WITH ELECTROCUTION. THE SUDDEN LURCHING OF THE SHIP MADE CONTACT VERY BRIEF. BUT IT WAS THE NEW POLYMER DUST STRIPS THAT PREVENTED LEE`S DEATH. I`M GOING TO HAVE THEM INSTALLED ON EVERY PIECE OF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT WE HAVE.

SO OUR GALLANT CAPTAIN SAVED THE DAY. NOW THESE PARTICULAR ALIENS KNOW WE HUMANS HAVE A BIT OF PLUCK.

WE NEVER SAW THE SPACECRAFT AND FRANKLY, I HOPE WE NEVER DO. WE`VE HAD ALIEN ENCOUNTERS BEFORE, BUT NOTHING LIKE THIS!

I`M RECOMENDING A PRESIDENTIAL COMMENDATION FOR CRANE, FOR IF IT HAD NOT BEEN FOR HIM, THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN TOTAL DESTRUCTION OF EARTH. AND I KIND OF LIKE BEING HERE.

SEE YOU IN PORT. STOCK THE O` CLUB WITH SOME CHOCOLATE CHIP AND PEANUT BUTTER COOKIES, WILL YOU? LEE AND CHIP GO THROUGH THEM LIKE POTATO CHIPS, AND LEE DESERVES A LITTLE REWARD!

HARRY.

Proceding to Norfolk at standard. We think the new dust panels installed over the missile control circuitry system saved my life. I had to short the circuits by hand . At least thats the only explaination Jaimie can give me, as he shakes his head and wonders why I=m still alive. It was a pretty hard jolt and felt like fire. But we lurched so suddenly, it was a very short contact.

I had to close the circuits as we=d been invaded by aliens, they wanted to destroy the world, and everyone aboard had been taken captive. It was an agonizing game of cat and mouse.

The aliens were testing our response to Agalactic stimuli@ and used hallucinations with form , robots, and deception.

I=m just glad its all over. Nelson=s sending a complete report to Special Services and wants me to have lunch with he and Admiral Allen in Washington after we dock at Norfolk. Just a quick hop by chopper.

MEDICAL OFFICER=S REPORT

Sharkey was RIGHT! Dr. Braddock was the big man-beast and was using Crane as a guinea pig to find a cure for the conversions! Crane apparently kept changing from man to man-beast. Only Sharkey noticed a size difference. Braddock was killed accidentically when he, Braddock, still in human form, tired to kill Nelson. It was after Braddock=s death that I was able to witness his body=s transformation into the big man-beast.

Crane, as the smaller man-beast, was finally caught, subdued, and placed in the diving bell. Nelson is going to take it down into the trench in the hopes that the time-elapsed antidote may still work under the increased pressure. Good luck admiral.

I regret to report the loss of Smith, apparently killed by Braddock, victim of his own invention. The artificial atmosphere somehow caused us both to change into those horrible nitemares.

It was a hair-raising experience, and I do mean hair-raising! We both kept turning into hairy monsters! And he knew all about it before he even came aboard!

Seems he swiped several khaki=s knowing he=d have attacks, and had a scapegoat or guinea pig, I=ll never know which, in me.

Why didn=t he tell us outright? I=m sure the admiral would have done anything to help him.

Again I owe my life to Nelson. Due to his skills and determination to help me.

I=m letting doc run extensive tests on me, and have been released under guard at my own request. While the admiral may be convinced I=m completely normal again, I=m unsure. I won=t be sure till I see the microscopic blood work completely analyzed.

*

SSRN SEAVIEW

Dear Pop,

You=re not gonna believe it, the skipper actually got turned into a hairy monster, a man-beast we called it. Seems this weird air we were testing changed him, so he kept changing back and forth into a hairy monster.

He was Awesome. And Ugly! And strong as any ten guys! We even thought he=d killed a guy, but it was this scientist guy who was already a man-beast who did it. He wanted to use the skipper as an experiment! To figure out how to stop his own bouts of the transformation.

Anyway, the admiral rushed to Seaview with an antidote he=d made up but it ran out of time. And the skipper=d busted out of sickbay, so we had to catch him, knock him out, and the admiral took him down in the bell and injected him anyway. Something about increased pressure.

Well, it worked and the skipper=s back to normal. And real broody. I think he kinda blames himself for not having been able to fight it off, but how could he? It could have happened to any of us.

Sharkey and Nelson are okay after thier ordeal from the deep freeze. Evidently the frosty aliens wanted our reactor to fuel up their spaceship. A spaceship which could have destroyed the whole planet.

Why didn=t they simply ask for help?

We were able to destroy their complex and the spacecraft.

Three Cranes, one of them killing Nelson, an avalanch just outside the boat, a jungle, a dinosaur, an island in the clouds, and a >death clock= of disintigration which Lee managed to destroy by jumping into a tidal wave right back into sickbay, and then his destroying the machine which destroyed Mallory with it, well, it all sounds loony to me!!

Dear Harry,

No, I=m not being childish! I know perfectly well that Lee isn=t serious. But I enjoy his company and he enjoys mine. And it=s really none of your business is it, brother mine?

And you weren=t exactly a one girl man either if I remember correctly. There=s no law against being friends or even dating more than one person a year, or month, or week, or day even.

I=ll choose my own friends, or lovers, thank you very much, and don=t go on now about Lee and me doing that. He=s been every inch a gentleman and hasn=t even attempted it. But I sure will! You can=t imagine how frustrating it is to be an old maid!

Rant and rave all you want, but I=m a grown woman with my own income and I=ll do what I want. And if you punish Lee by firing him, it=s your loss. SO THERE!!

In fact, we have a date tonight, so I may just suggest a little fa-de-ral, or for your pigheaded grammar, passionate intimacy with him! I don=t know if he=ll agree. You know he=s rather moralistic, and probably a virgin himself, but I=m sure going to tempt fate!

And I wouldn=t ask him about it tomorrow or whenever you get back from Annapolis! I=ll be giving you full details!!!

Dear Harry,

Is everything ok? I have`t heard from you in awhile, and when I called on Edith she was crying. She didn`t tell me much of anything, but I gather you both had a little atlercation before you left for your sabbatical, teaching at Annapolis.

Lee was very concerned and asked me to try to get her to talk. He has no idea what the problem is either. All I was able to gather from her comments, was that she=`d had words with you and that you were ` a pigheaded old fashioned fuddy duddy without any idea about life`. I`ve never seen her so upset or angry.

Lee wanted me to take her to a doctor, but after a little while she calmed down and even asked me to post a letter she`d just written to you.

I have a feeling it won=`t be a pleasant letter. She=`s getting ready for a date with Lee, now. I hope it helps. I`ve offered to stay the night, to keep her company when they get back, but she said thank you, very sweetly and assured me she was ok and not to worry, that it was just a `female` problem that caused her little outburst. I wonder, though, Harry. Tell me, does she have many friends? I`m so glad she has Lee, she needs a good friend tonight.

Please fax or call.

Dear Joe,

Help? I need someone to talk to. You know I=ve had a lot a girl friends, that=s friends, not broads. Well, I think I=ve fallen in love, and it=s a bit unnerving.

I can=t help thinking about her. All the time. And if I can=t pay attention to the work on my desk, how on earth can I pay attention at the periscope when we=re underway?

We=ve been on simple little dates. Nothing serious. But now...nothing else seems to matter but her. Especially when we go to that beautiful ridge and watch the waves in the moonlight. It=s sheer heaven. The view and the company. But don=t worry. I know when to stop my raging hormones and get her home safely, me too, before things get out of hand. But it=s difficult and a few times I really didn=t really know if I could have trusted myself. She=s just so wonderful.

But there=s a problem.

She=s the boss=s sister. Ulp. That=s right, Joe, Edith. You remember her. I just don=t know how he=ll react. Oh, I know he=ll understand it=s not brown-nosing, but ethically, well, how can I possibly remain aboard Seaview if I marry her. Do you realize he=d be my brother in law? But I can=t live without her, Joe. I can=t. Think I=m in love, I told you? I KNOW I am!!

So, put in a word for me with Stark, will you? I=ll send a formal request for transfer back to the Navy as soon as I=m sure she=ll say yes.

I pray she does.

PS. And contrary to your opinion, I=ve never taken advantage of anyone, especially her.

Dear Admiral Nelson,

Sir, please don=t let Lee or Edith know I=m writing you, but you deserve to know the truth about Lee=s request for transfer.

He really doesn=t want to sir. It=s just that he=s concerned about ethics. Seems he and Edith are an item.

In fact, he=s asked her to marry him, and not because he has to. He=s as much a virgin as she is. This is in strictest confidence sir.

Ensign Bates and Edith chatted girl talk and both were blushing about wedding nights. Bate=s gave her some advice, I take it, though I wasn=t exactly in on the conversation, and Lee=s spoken to me privately and I=m positive he=s never indulged either. He really doesn=t have a clue about certain, uh, well, things, aside from magazines, videos, and guy talk.

Please dont dismiss him from Seaview. He=s only concerned about the ethics of having his boss for a brother in law, and he doesn=t exactly like the thought, with or without Seaview. Seems he regards you like a brother already, and just doesn=t know how to handle an Aofficial relationship@.That sort of thing is open to all kinds of insinuations.

Admiral Stark=s open to the idea of sending him back to you if you can guarantee an invitation to the wedding. I=m sorry Lee and Edith didn=t tell you. They were going to keep it all a secret until after the event and his transfer was complete, but I just couldn=t help myself from telling Stark, and you really needed to know.

What do you mean give Crane back? You sure, Harry? Just be sure not to stumble when you walk Edith down the aisle. And don=`t forget the ring.

Brother of the bride AND best man! I don`t suppose you`ll perform the ceremony too?? See you then.

PS. I understand from Jackson that Crane could use a little talk. Jackson suggested Jamison, unless you`d like to do the honors. No, scratch that. Highly unsuitable for a big brother. Tell you what. I`ll give him the little talk. REALLY surprized he may actually need one!

Lee=s been rather broody and moody after our little altercation with Mr. Pemm again.

Apparently still alive he came to me while I was at NIMR just after Seaview was destroyed with all hands. He zapped me back to jsut before her explosion, then back to the past just before the meeting of Benedict Arnold and Major Andre!

Pemm wanted to change history and become rich, but we were able to outwit him and when he made contact with the reactor terminal, he perished, I hope.

Lee=s been extreemly broody. He=s pondered all sorts of philosophical questions, such as did changing our own history do harm, and if we changed ours, what about foiling Pemms, were we hypocrites? Etc.

Lee=s always had a high sense of morals but knows I=d do just about anything to save my boys. And is it hypocritical when Pemm himself arranged our explosion?

But the point is moot. Pemm is gone, the device is totalled, and we are where we are. We=ll just have to sit tight and see. So far I see no dinosaurs playing football and we still have a president and not a monarch. Frankly, I dont see anything wrong. And I pray that=s not just a gut instinct.

I do still wonder if Nelson did the right thing in Asaving@ Seaview from the explosion Pemm set up in our future. Should the admial have come to our rescue? Poetic justice he calls it. I=m not so sure.

I=m just going to have to leave it with the Almighty. After all, if HE didn=t want us to be alive , we wouldn=t be. End of discussion.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES GLEANED FROM COMPILED SOURCES

Admiral Harriman Nelson:

Owner/creator of the first windowed submarine, Seaview. Believed to have been a former military leader, also scientist, researcher, author, and explorer of Earth=s seas as well as the dry beds of Mars.

While thought to have been very reclusive, he is believed to have sired a great many offspring around the world. Many prominent individuals claim descent from Harriman, though none can be documented.

Noted for an inquiring mind and sheer genious, he is also thought to have been extreemly stubborn and exeedingly loyal to his servant-employees.

Senile in old age, he was physically restrained from following through with a mad plan to travel in time via a pocket watch ( an ancient form of time keeping)in the hopes of bringing Lee Crane back to life, tragically killed while saving his shipmate=s lives, including Harriman=s.

Nelson=s cremated remains were supposedly scattered along with his sister=s near the former Marianas Trench.

Admiral Jiggs Stark:

Evidently in charge of submarines of the western seas.

Admiral Ivan Allan:

Anybody=s guess.

Commander Lee Crane:

Loyal servant-employee of Nelson=s. Known for his abilities as mariner and steadfast heroism. Believed to have recieved many acolades and round metal disks of ritualistic reward to wear on his clothing. Known to have been somewhat embarrased by praise or tribute, he was fiercely loyal to the submarine Seaview and to Nelson, despite rumors that persist to this day of a possible relationship outside of the master-employer/servant-employee one, though no evidence has been found to indicate any validity to the rumors.

He is said to have been joined in the ancient procreative union ritual called marriage to Nelson=s sister. Also thought to have engaged in joinings with several other servant-employee=s of Nelson=s, and also with the inhabitants of Oceanica during its isolation, and elsewhere, though no evidence has been found to substantiate these beliefs.

He was buried in the Marianas Trench just after the great upheaval, and his monument of volcanic glass stands still. Badly scarred and encrusted with age, what remains of it simply says: Lee Crane , beloved friend.

Commander Chip Morton:

First mate of Seview. Believed to have sired more than 57 offspring aound the world.

Chief Jones:

Anybody=s guess.

Chief Sharkey:
