All of our patterns have been hosptial tested and used on Premature infants of all stages. My oldest son was premature and I had no choice but to design my own patterns for him. He was born in 1972, when preemie clothing was non-existent. I had no idea what I had on my hands until the day my youngest son came home from the hospital. He had spent 12 days in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit. The nursing staff had seen the outfits I made for a friend who's baby was just 3 pounds. After taking Brian home, the nursing staff called me at midnight, knowing his schedule and that I would be up with him that night, and said, "We have 5 mothers here wanting to buy Preemie clothing. What are you going to do about it?" It was then, I worked hand in hand with the nursing staff to perfect my patterns in order to develop them to give baby the best comfort possible while adding some style and flair to make Mom and Dad happy too.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

LAUNDERING BABY'S CLOTHING

Sewing for your baby can be a very rewarding thing. You get to pick the fabric quality, color and feel. Once you gain a little experience, the sky is the limit. Your imagination and creative juices flow and you start creating things you never dreamed you could do.

Sewing is only half the battle however. Caring for baby's little things is just as important. What you use and how you handle baby's laundry can help to keep baby comfortable or create skin rashed and discomforts making it impossible for you to keep baby happy.

Choose a mild laundry detergent. Never use soaps, as they are so hard to rinse out. There is no need to spend lots of money to get the best detergent available. Many Multi-Level Salespeople will tell you their detergents are best for one reason or another. However, there have been studies done that have proven that no detergent is "superior to another" when it comes to cleaning power. You will want to select a detergent without added fillers. Fillers are anything from sawdust to minute plastic fibers, that create "bulk" in the detergent, fooling you into thinking there is something else there.

We have had some of the worst cases of Infant and child rashes from detergents I have known of. After spending extra money on this product and that product, I learned the very best detergent for my infant and famliy laundry was the big bucket of detergent sold in grocery stores. HUISH puts it out and it is under many different names. Albetson's is usually the store you will find the best prices at, and it is under their own store name. Check around. If you cannot find it in your area, contact us as we have our own detergent now.

All you need is 1/4 cup detergent in the full load of laundry. Learn not to overload the machine, as that will prevent your washer from being able to rinse out the residues. Any residue left behind is a potential rash for sensitive skins.

The use of a fabric softener is the same. Adding a cup of baking soda to the last rinse can also help to release the residues, as well as help keep your baby from reacting to added substances in the laundry. Baking soda softens the water, and leaves the clothes smelling fresh without the perfumes that are hard on baby's skin.

Tumble dry baby's clothing. This also makes them soft. Dry them on medium heat for best care of the clothing and to reduce harsh fabrics that can lead to discomfort for baby.

Unless there is a need to launder baby's outer wear items in hot water, warm will do just fine. Warm water helps prevent fading of color, harshness of fabrics, and causes much less wear on baby's cloting. Be sure to sort colors and place light colors with light colors, dark with dark, and white with white. This is a very important part of your laundry.

Bleaching is not recommended as a normal part of baby's laundry, even for cloth diapers. Bleach is a very harsh chemical. It is very hard to rinse clean of the fabric, and has been the cause of many infants, children and adults having skin rashes and irritations. Unless there is a real need, do not use bleach for baby's laundry. We do touch on bleach for cloth diapers in a couple of paragraphs.

Do not let laundry pile up for any length of time. In humid areas, leaving clothing laying in a heap, may result in mold with in 24 hours. You can launder baby's outer clothing with the rest of the family wash if you keep them sorted to like colors. Of course you would not want to place jeans with regular clothing, no matter what the color is. Denims go with denims, towels with towels, and so on.

If you are using cloth diapers, they need to be rinsed free of solid matter before placing in the washer. You will need to wash them on hot with a hot rinse, as well as do not put anything but diapers with the diapers. You do not need extra detergent, but you may want to add 1/2 cup of bleach. If you do bleach baby's diapers, be sure you put them through the normal complete cycle your washer does, with the bleach and detergent added before the diapers go in. When that cycle has completed all the cycles it normally does, reset it to the beginning again, using hot water again. This time add 1 cup of baking soda and let it run the normal courses again. The baking soda helps take out the bleach, and any other residue left in and softens the diapers. You may be amazed at how much this will do to help prevent diaper rashes for your baby.

When your laundry is ready to come out of the dryer, it is very important that you remove it promptly after the dryer stops. Cloting left in the dryer and cools inside it, may become wrinkled and you may not be able to remove those wrinkles. If your dryer has a bell or buzzer to remind you it is finished, set it. You will never have any of Baby's little outfits ruined from permenant set wrinkles, as long as you remove the clothing promptly.
