Mark Lowry
What's
a comedian doing in a guide to Christian musicians? Funny man Mark Lowry
is more that just a joke-a-minute. He is also an important part of the
Gaither Vocal Band and a competent soloist in his own right. His comedy
albums usually include tunes like "Noah" from FIRST TIME ON PLANET
EARTH. However as a songwriter, Lowry may best be known for "Mary
Did You Know" made popular by friend and ex-Gaither Vocal Band member
Michael English. In 1994 he released what may be the first parody album
to use Christian music as its target. In the spirit of Weird Al Yankovic,
Lowry included the album title MOUTH IN MOTION (HEART IN MOTION - Amy Grant)
and the selections; "The Date Adventure" ("The Great Adventure"
- Steven Curtis Chapman) and "Some Other Time, Some Other Place"
("Another Time, Another Place" - Sandi Patty) among others. The
parodies continued with the release of REMOTELY CONTROLLED, an insane romp
through the world of television and commercials. A highlight of this effort
is to hear Lowry perform his own version of Mary Did You Know. It'll knock
your socks off.
