When Paul Smith came to the Imperials he had tremendous shoes to fill. Previous vocal leader Russ Taff had been instrumental in the Imperials' transformation from a southern gospel/inspirational quartet to leaders in Christian pop. Although Smith contributed with well-crafted songs, superb vocals, and two chart topping albums, the Imperials never seemed to achieve the success of the Taff/Omartian/Chris Christian era while Smith was at the vocal helm. When Smith went solo, everyone realized that the young vocalist had a voice and style all his own. His first album LIVE AND LEARN produced several radio favorites including the #1 song "Never Be Another". Full of joy and love, Smith danced his way into the hearts of listeners. Later albums like BACK TO WHO I AM and EXTRA MEASURE have steadied him in an acoustic pop mode sometimes much like that of Don Henley's END OF INNOCENCE or Bruce Hornsby. Paul Smith seems to have found his place in the world of Christian Music.
