THE ALHAMBRA IN WORDS, PHOTOS AND GUITAR MUSIC

RECUERDO DE LA ALHAMBRA by Francisco Tarrega MIDI

"The Alhambra, Granada, Spain, 14th century, The most perfect example of western Islamic architecture. The Court of Lions is the center of the harem, or private apartments of the palace. ln the middle of the court is a fountain with twelve symbolic lions, a rare example of Islamic free- standing sculpture, and from four channels water is carried into the surrounding halls. The interior of the palace has a delicate, weightless character which contrasts strongly wiih the stark appearance ot the exterior."

I'm sure that Tarrega had the above Alhambra scene in mind when he wrote his famous guitar composition, Recuerdos De La Alhambra. He probably heard the murmur of the tremelo in the sound of water spilling from the fountain."

Some words I found describing the Alhambra:

"In the 5th century BC, it (Granada) was called Elibyrge; under the Romans it was known as Iliberis. The Mohammedans made it a prosperous city until its conquest by Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492. The town inherited a jewel of world architecture from the Nasrid dynasty - the Alhambra, a series of fortresses, gardens and palaces of the 13th to 14th centuries. The -mountains, and the town is spread around its base. Other buildings are the Generalife palace, a country residence, with an exuberant garden and fountains; the palace of Charles V, one of the most outstanding examples of Spanish Renaissance; the Cathedral with a façade by Alonso Cano, the Plateresque churches of Santa Ana and San Juan de los Reyes, as well as a large number of monasteries and convents. The Sacromonte is the old gypsy quarter. Plaza San Nicolas in the Albacin offers a picturesque view of the Alhambra and the City."

I include this photo which made me think of the lions in the Alhambra courtyard. St. Augustine was founded in 1565 by the Spanish explorer Ponce De Leon (or Ponce of the Lion) in his quest for the Fountain of Youth. The actual Fountain of Youth is still giving visitors "eternal youth" to this day. St. Augustine is the oldest city in the US.
