Rabbi Twerski tells a story of a man of meager earnings who gave so much charity that he went into debt. Rabbi Twerski's father refused to accept a donation from that man, referring to the verse, "Do not be a tzaddik (righteous) to excess." (Ecclesiastes 7:16)

Later in life, that man became very wealthy, but he turned out to be a miser who refused to give even a penny to charity.

This indicates that it is an important thing to achieve balance in good behavior, or as the Rambam says, "Virtue is a mean, and neither extreme is virtuous."
