Dhammadaayaada Majjhima Muulapa.n.naasa, Muulapariyaaya Vagga MN.003 M.i.012ff. 17/203 contentment, materialism The Buddha exhorts the monks at Jetavana to strive earnestly to be heirs not of material legacy, but of the spiritual legacy of the Buddha. On the Buddha’s departure, Sariputta is asked to expand upon how the monks can cultivate the inner life in the way expected by the Buddha. The sutta is often cited as teaching the virtues of contentment.
