Mahaasaaropama Majjhima Muulapa.n.naasa, Opamma Vagga MN.029 M.i.192-7 18/546 monkhood, aim in ordination Preached soon after Devadatta's secession. Some young men leave the household life being lured by the life of a monk. As monk they receive presents, esteem and repute. These things please them and satisfy their aspirations so much that they become conceited and disparaging of others. Thus they grow remiss and become prey to suffering. Their case resembles that of a man who needing timber, goes into a forest and is satisfied with cutting off the leafy foliage or the bark of a tree, knowing nothing about the different grades of wood. On the other hand, the monk who is satisfied only when he reaches the end of suffering is like a man who takes only the choicest timber, and rejects any other inferior timber.
