Mahaaraahulovaada Majjhima Majjhimapa.n.naasa, Bhikkhu Vagga MN.062 M.i.420-6 20/278 meditation, breathing meditation, contemplation of the elements While on almsround, Buddha instructs Rahula saying that all aggregates should be regarded as non-self. Rahula stops under a tree and meditates. Sariputta approaches and suggests he try breathing meditation. Later in the evening Rahula asks the Buddha how he can practice breathing meditation. The Buddha describes how this can be done by regarding all the elements with disgust and loathing of mind. Just as the earth remains impassive to whatever is thrown upon it -- so it is with other elements. One should grow in loving kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity, contemplation of hte body’s corruption, perception of the fleeting nature of things and in the mindfulness which comes from ordered breathing.
