Dantabhuumi | Dantabhumi | Majjhima | Uparipa.n.naasa, Su~n~nata Vagga | MN.125 | M.iii.128ff. | 23/084 | discipline, attachment | Jayasena visits the novice Aciravata and asks him to explain how a monk whose life is strenuous and purged of self can find peace in his heart. At the end of Aciravatas discourse, Jayasena leaves disatisfied. Aciravata mentions the matter to the Buddha who says that understanding of such matters is beyond Jayasena who is too undisciplined and attached to pleasure. By analogy, including that of the catching and taming of a wild elephant, the Buddha explains how he tames his disciples. [BB] |
