A mysterious woman arrives in Smallville, claiming to be Clark's birth mother. The Kents tell Clark what happened the day they found him, how his adoption was fixed, and why Jonathan hates the Luthors.

Who is Rachel Dunlevy? A woman ambushes Clark at school, introducing herself as his birth mother. The Kents deny it. Rachel tells Lex she gave up a baby for adoption years ago, and she thinks he's Clark. Rachel claims the boy was Lionel's illegitimate son, so the boy is Lex's brother. Rachel confronts Lionel with her claims. Rachel was Lex's mother's nurse during her illness. She had 7 years of psychiatric care after her son "Lucas" was taken away by Lionel.
What's up with Chloe? Clark angrily accuses Chloe of snooping into his adoption and privacy, after he asked her not to. She admits she posted some info on some adoption Web sites. Rachel contacted Chloe. In their conflict, Clark makes a hurtful comment about Chloe's own absent mom. We learn her mom left her dad when she was 5-years-old.
Guest-star Blair Brown portrays "Rachel Dunlevy." Ms. Brown has appeared in several films and starred in the TV series "The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd."
Patrick Cassidy had a small multi-episode role as Leslie Luckabee on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.
The story of Clark's adoption: Clark asks Martha and Jonathan about his adoption. Jonathan does a flashback to tell the story of the Great Meteor Shower of 1989. They found Clark and the spaceship as they tried to get home safely. Martha wrapped Clark up and into the truck, Jonathan hid the spaceship in the back of his pickup. Lionel Luthor flagged them down on a country road for help with 9-year-old Lex, who was unconscious in a field. Jonathan took Lionel and Lex to the hospital. Lionel credited Jonathan with saving Lex's life, and offered his help if ever needed. Later, the sheriff came to the Kent home, checking on their safety. He saw Clark, and asked who he was. On the spot, Martha made up a story that they had just adopted him, named him Clark after her family name, and brought him home from Metropolis. Jonathan asked for Lionel's help in making the "adoption" legal.
What's up with Clark? Now the sheriff comes to the farm, telling the Kents that Rachel has gained a judge's order for a DNA sample from Clark to prove her relationship. He gives the sample, but later breaks into the genetics lab with Pete, switching the DNA sample with Pete's saliva.
What's up with Lana? Lana is digging into her own origins. She discovers the man in the photo with her mother is Henry Small, of the founding family of Smallville. She visits his home. Lana asks Henry if he loved her mother, and if he's her father. Henry is married with his own family, and tells Lana she is mistaken. Later Henry admits he doesn't know if Lana is his daughter, but is willing to find out.
What's up with Jonathan? Clark asks Jonathan why he hates Lionel Luthor if he helped in the adoption. Jonathan explains that the day Lionel brought Jonathan the legal adoption papers, Lionel asked Jonathan to speak to his friends the Ross brothers (Pete's family) to persuade them to sell Luthor their farm. When Jonathan refused, Lionel gave him a masked threat about revealing the adoption. Jonathan did speak to the Ross family, and now carries the guilt of feeling responsible for the growth of LuthorCorp. and the ruination of the community, as he helped Lionel gain a foothold by using his influence.
What's up with Lex? Lex asks Clark about Rachel's claim that they may be brothers. Clark tells him its impossible, since she is not his mother. To get the truth from Lionel, Rachel surprises Lex with an injection to knock him out, kidnapping and imprisoning Lex in her home. She wants a press conference with an announcement from Lionel stating Clark is their illegitimate son. Lionel does hold a press conference, announcing he will never give in to the extortion of the kidnapper. Enraged, Rachel swings an ax towards Lex. He pushes her away, and falls hitting his head and slipping into unconsciousness.
How it ends: Clark arrives at Rachel's house as Rachel is about to swing the ax at Lex again. He stops her, and she falls to the floor, sobbing in a breakdown.
Later at the mansion, Lex asks Lionel about Rachel's claims. Lionel admits he was unfaithful to Lex's mother. He says Rachel showed up with an infant, accusing him of paternity. Lionel saw to it that the boy was placed with a suitable family, and paid off Rachel, getting her into psychiatric treatment. Lionel says the boy "Lucas" died before his first birthday. After Lex leaves the room, Lionel opens a locket in which he keeps a photo of himself with a blonde boy, aged 5 or so. The locket also contains a lock of blonde hair.

RECAP:
We open on a scene of Kent Farm domesticity as MamaKent enters the shot wearing her new Life With Bonnie business suit. She puts a nice new-looking leather briefcase up on the counter. They couldn't afford feed for the animals last week, but she can buy a knockoff Louis Vuitton? Oh, right. Last week's episode was a leftover from Season One. My bad. I'll stop bringing that up. As happy morning music plays, MamaKent calls out for Clark, who according to her MamaVoice, is going to be late. He says he's coming as fast as he can. I used to have a friend whose mom was one of those kind that cusses around the kids and lets them smoke if they want to. And when she'd call him, he'd say, "I'm coming!" and she'd yell back, "No you're not, you're just breathing hard!" I imagine she no longer has custody of her children. Clark superzips down the stairs, carrying a blue coat in his hand. MamaKent asks how he can be fast as lightning and slow as molasses all at the same time. Go MamaKent with the dual simile! Clark says sometimes he's a mystery even to himself. Bo asks what happened to the alarm clock he recently fixed for Clark. He sips out of his bovine coffee mug. Clark says he crushed the clock this morning hitting the snooze alarm. As he talks, Clark grabs a piece of bread and starts doing the heat/ejaculation thing with his eyes to toast it. How can that possibly be sanitary? Clark says he's not much of a morning person. Bo says, inexplicably, that Clark must have gotten that from his mother. (Adopted mother?) Bo grabs the toast from Clark's hand and burns himself. Fool! Bo mentions that MamaKent was late to her own wedding. Maybe she didn't want to go. MamaKent says that not all of them were trained by roosters. Ooh, veiled cock joke! Clark mentions that they're studying Greek tragedy in school. Cool: the foreshadowing has been set. Wait for it...wait for it...Clark takes a bite of his eye-jam toast. He looks at his watch. The next thing we see is Clark running out of the house, toast in hand, then zipping through the barn, out into the field and away! He comes out faster than Christina Aguilera's underwear.

After Clark is away, we pan down as the red Kent truck pulls out past the barn. Just as the truck departs, a woman with bright red hair and a long, brown coat steps out from the side of the barn. It's Blair Brown! Aw, Molly Dodd. We sure missed you. She looks around and walks toward the Kent home. She steps right in through the kitchen door as soft, nostalgic music plays. The house is fully furnished, which we've never really seen. In a hallway, she looks at a bunch of pictures on a wall next to the stairs. She picks up one of the frames. She runs her fingers over a picture of Clark in a tan coat and blue shirt. His hair is, for once, behaving itself. She takes a sharp breath of air, puts her finger to her lips, and looks over to the left. (more...)

QUOTES:

REVIEWS:
Clark: I guess I'm not a morning person.
Jonathan: You got that from your mother. She'd be late for her own wedding. In fact, she was late to her own wedding.
Martha: Just because I wasn't trained by roosters.

Pete: Oh, man, this 'Mission: Impossible' stuff is great.

Pete: I'm not sure other than my scintillating conversational skills why you brought me along.
Clark: I need your spit.

Lionel: You haven't changed, Rachel. You're still irrational.

Clark: She just showed up at school. 'Hi, Clark! I'm your mother!' Who does that?
(Lana raises her hand)

Clark: Chloe, I'm glad to see you.
Chloe: There's a sentence I never thought I'd hear again.

Lex: Personally, I think I got all the looks in the family.

Here’s the skinny: A woman, Rachel Dunlevy, comes to town claiming to be Clark’s mother. She had an illegitimate child with Lionel and he made her give it up. So now, she’s back looking for her son, Lucas. After Jonathan and Martha try to tell her there is no way Clark is her son, she gets tough and requests a DNA test. Obviously, this is bad news for Clark. So, he and Pete go recon and swap Clark’s DNA sample for one of Pete’s. Normally, this would end things, but being insane, Rachel decides that Lionel has somehow fixed the test. So she kidnaps Lex and holds him hostage, not realizing how ruthless Lionel really is.

All this time Jonathan explains to Clark what happened the day he arrived and how he became their son. I loved how at first Lionel seems so nice and caring. He’s worried about Lex and thankful that Jonathan helped him save his son. Then, as soon as Jonathan asks for a favor, he turns around and blackmails him with it, and not just any blackmail. No, instead Jonathan has to talk his friends into selling their factory to Luthor Corp. This gives the company the foothold into Smallville. Because of this, Jonathan blames himself for Luthor Corp’s stranglehold on the town. Which is a shame, because Lionel would’ve found a way into Smallville whether or not Jonathan helped him. So now we finally know why Jonathan hates Lionel. (more...)
