Ode to a Spider

A modern day Arachne lived
Her whole life's web she spun
When she'd finished half her life
She looked back on what she'd done
Her life's web was in such a mess
She began to fall apart
You see, her life was in the web,
The web was Arachne's heart.
Some careless souls had chanced upon
Arachne when she was young
They trod upon the thread of life
And her heart was ripped along
And now, a grown Arachne stood
Unable to repair the past
Until a teenage boy walked by
"What's wrong with you," he asked.
Arachne wiped away her tears
And then began to say,
"My web... is in a rather alarming
State of disarray."
"The understatement of the year,"
The young boy said, and stared.
And then, "My name is Matthew,"
As if Arachne almost cared.
"What do you want, "Arachne asked
"To be your friend," he said
"To love is to be hurt," she said
And shook her big black head.
"Let go," he said, "let go of your past."
"I can't let go," she declared.
"I have to learn to defend myself
Against those who have not cared."
Matthew bent down and touched a tear
On Arachne's spidery cheek.
"Without the risk of love in our lives,
We become so cold and weak."
"Weakness caused this," she replied,
Looking back now on her web.
"Your only fault was too much trust,
But that I admire," he said.
"You can learn to love, but before you do,
You must forget the past.
You have to take life very slow
To find a love that lasts."
Arachne looked into his eyes
And saw that he really cared
She stepped onto his shoulder
And her life's web she then shared.
"It's going to need a lot of time
And work," Arachne said.
And then, together, they began
To spin another web.
