THE CURRENT POLITICAL URGENCY IN BURMA
Once again, the SPDC (SLORC)
military clique has insulted the people of Burma. Daw Aung
San Suu Kyi’s call for a National Parliament with the elected
peoples’ representatives of 1990 polls dead-line on August
21, 1998, was simply ignored by the illegal ruling military
in Rangoon.
Furthermore, the latest
update on Burma cited that, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been
taken back to Rangoon in an ambulance from her 13-day stand-point,
outside of Rangoon, demanding the release of the elected peoples’
representatives.
We feel that due to the
current serious and urgent situations both for Burma and Daw
Aung San Suu Kyi’s future, that we must publicize the following
and reaffirm our commitment for peace and democracy in Burma.
- We firmly regard the prevailing
political situation in Burma as most crucial in a decade
of Burma’s historical struggle for democracy and human rights.
- We firmly believe that the 13-point
proposal as outlined by Daw Aung Sun Suu Kyi-led National
League for Democracy (NLD), represents the will and decision
of all the people of Burma.
- The prevailing chaos in Burma
as the culmination of SPDC (SLORC) mismanagement and negligence
of Burma’s interests, and refusal to peaceful negotiations
to resolve differences and problems, in addition to resorting
to violent repressive measures.
- The SPDC is entirely responsible
for all political, economical and social upheavals occurring
in Burma today.
- We warmly welcome the advent
of a constructive negotiation as publicized in Clause (4)
in the 13-point proposal by the NLD which proposes open
access to peaceful negotiations at all times.
- We believe that the NLD has the
right to refuse acknowledgment of the SPDC (SLORC) National
Convention and to prepare for the call for the National
Parliament dead-lined on August 21, 1998 as vital and an
appropriate step toward the emergence of a democratic constitution
to establish the democratic Union of Burma.
Therefore, we earnestly
call on the Australian Government to strongly condemn the
unlawful and repressive SPDC (SLORC) and apply effective measures
on the military regime in Burma to:
- let the democratically elected,
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi led, NLD convene the National Parliament
immediately;
- encourage the SPDC (SLORC)
to engage in dialogue with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi ;
- free all political prisoners
and student activists; and
- re-open all universities and
colleges closed since December 1996.
WE STRONGLY DEMAND THAT
THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT IMPOSE ECONOMIC SANCTION AGAINST
SPDC, BURMESE MILITARY REGIME AND URGE THE STATE GOVERNMENTS
TO ADOPT SELECTIVE PURCHASING LAWS.
