Support Burmese Embassy Protest
Members of the Burmese and
Australian community will rally outside the Burmese Embassy
this Friday, 21st August. The leader of the National
League for Democracy (NLD), Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has set this
as the final day for the reconvening of the national Parliament
eleceted in the 1990 elections.
The rally will occur on Friday
at 1.30pm at
the Burmese Embassy (22 Arkana
St. Yarralumla).
The protest is part of an international
campaign to oust the Burmese dictatorship. Protesters will
demand that the Australian Government impose economic sanctions
if the Burmese Parliament is not reconvened.
Maung Maung Than, the General Secretary
of the All Burma Students’ Democratic Organisation (ABSDO)
said today:
"I am not so convinced that military regime
has met U Aung Shwe from NLD today. We have encouraged the
regime to have a peaceful dialogue with our leader Daw Aung
San Suu Kyi who is wholely trusted by the entire people of
Burma."
Students’ Association President,
Harry Greenwell said: "ANU students wholeheartedly support
the protests outside the Burmese embassy. The present situation
in Burma is deplorable. Student leaders have been locked up
for years, merely for calling on the Government to respect
the overwhelming vote for Aung San Suu Kyi in 1990."
For more information or comment, contact:
Harry Greenwell on 0413 805 027 or Maung Maung Than on 0411

Students will condemn the military regime
by burning the military flag, blockade the embassies. March
around major embassies calling for increase support to democracy
movement.
