Statement on Global Action for "Free all political prisoners and
-----------------------------------------------------------------
student leader, Min Ko Naing, in Burma" Campaign
------------------------------------------------
Date: 17th, April 2001
Ref No. CCDB 02/2001
In support of and in solidarity with our brothers’ worldwide staging
demonstrations in front of the Burmese embassies around the world today,
Burmese New Year Day, we members of CCDB-Melbourne gather at the City Center
to strongly voice our desire for the immediate release of all political
prisoners including student leader Min Ko Naing in Burma.
We firmly believe that the prevailing political situation in Burma is still
stalemate and the process of the secret talks between Daw Aung San Suu Kyi
and the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), has not been revealed to
the public since October 2000.
The present ruling military regime is holding the people of Burma as hostage
at gunpoint and more than 1800 political prisoners have still been detained
for long term imprisonment since it took over the power of the country in
1988 as known worldwide.
We simply believe that the SPDC should release all political prisoners to
pacify the people of Burma if the SPDC is really sincere and willing to
solve the problems of the country by peaceful political means as expected
and strongly voiced by the people of Burma and the international community.
Therefore, we hereby earnestly demand to the ruling regime, SPDC, to
immediately release all political prisoners including students leader Min Ko
Naing detained since March 1989 by showing the progress of the talks between
the SPDC and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on this auspicious moment of the
traditional New Year Day in Burma.
