~Interview with Trevor Hurst~

June 26, 1998 - Taken from www.muchmusic.com

RICK THE TEMP: Hey, we're here back at MUCHMUSIC. I'm Rick. This is Trevor here. Trevor, welcome.

TREVOR: Thank you.

RICK THE TEMP: And nice meeting you...officially.

TREVOR: Yeah.

RICK THE TEMP: Trevor from Econoline Crush. We met a while ago. Actually I don't know -- it wasn't an official meeting, though.

TREVOR: It was just like a... (Making whooshing noise)

RICK THE TEMP: We flew by each other, just said hi.

TREVOR: HEY, HOO!

RICK THE TEMP: I knew you from your hair...

TREVOR: My hair?

RICK THE TEMP: You have that colourful hair, the spiky hair. See, now I'm trying to do the same right here. You see? Is it working?

TREVOR: It's kind of going. You've got some little colour options in there.

RICK THE TEMP: Yeah, Yeah, I noticed that.

FROM THE AUDIENCE: GREY!

RICK THE TEMP: GREY? No, it's not grey; it's just a generic sort of thing. Let's get down to business here. "The Devil You Know", right here.

TREVOR: Right there.

RICK THE TEMP: And you guys are performing on EDGEfest.

TREVOR: Yeah.

RICK THE TEMP: All eight cities, all across Canada.

TREVOR: All the cities. It's not really all across Canada, though, in fairness to those guys in the Maritimes.

RICK THE TEMP: Yeah, why don't we do the Maritimes?

TREVOR: I don't know. That's a problem, because we've played the Maritimes and that's the first thing everybody said was "Why aren't you out there?"

RICK THE TEMP: We'll try and send you out to the Eastern coast of Canada some day as well. We'll work on it for next year. Let's name off the cities now. You're starting it all off in Ottawa, this coming Monday.

TREVOR: Ottawa on Monday. How does it go?

RICK THE TEMP: I think we have it keyed up there. Then June 30th, Montreal; July 1st, That's Canada Day in Barrie.

TREVOR: Barrie.

RICK THE TEMP: And July 4th, "the Peg". Have you been there before?

TREVOR: I love "the Peg". I lived in the peg.

RICK THE TEMP: Oh, you did? Yeah?

TREVOR: That's a good city.

RICK THE TEMP: I was at "the Peg" for my first time a few weeks ago.

TREVOR: What did you think?

RICK THE TEMP: I liked it. I was in and out, but they were very nice people.

TREVOR: They are nice! And a lot of restaurants, good people...

RICK THE TEMP: Nothing but good people all across this nation.

TREVOR: They miss the Jets, though. But they have the moose. And I think I saw you wearing a moose jersey!

RICK THE TEMP: I was wearing a moose jersey, Manitoba moose. Yeah, actually they were defeated by Chicago the first round of the IHL...is it? WAS WEARING

TREVOR: Yeah. Who's their coach?

RICK THE TEMP: Randy Carlyle, Begins all those scraps. Has all those penalty minutes. Anyway, let's carry on. Saskatoon, July 5th; July 8th, Edmonton; July 9th, Calgary; July 11th, Vancouver. That's where you're finishing off?

TREVOR: Yep, hometown.

RICK THE TEMP: You're feeling good about this tour?

TREVOR: I'm feeling great about it.

RICK THE TEMP: I know it hasn't started yet, but...

TREVOR: It's great. It's like -- I say it's like summer camp. It is. You get to go on this little adventure with all these other neat bands, and it's catered.

RICK THE TEMP: Yeah, it's catered. There you go.

TREVOR: What else do you want?

RICK THE TEMP: You were talking about the other bands. I'm thinking about all these people that are going to be coming to see you guys. Do you have any advice for the crowd? There's going to be thousands and thousands. Any advice on -- first of all, let's talk about personal hygiene.

TREVOR: Personal hygiene...

RICK THE TEMP: How are these people going to keep clean? It's a day-event.

TREVOR: It's dirty; it's very dirty. Port-a-potties too. Oh man! Sun screen for sure. Sun screen... bring a tissue, just in case, you know, you get a little sweaty.

RICK THE TEMP: How about bottled water?

TREVOR: Bottle of water, yeah.

RICK THE TEMP: Never hurts.

TREVOR: Lots of money. I think just bring a lot of cash... Lots of cash! And then just go right -- there's like, a booth that sells Econoline Crush t-shirts. Just go right to that booth! Just go right there with all your money and then buy that stuff and get it on. Because like, our shirts are specially designed, not like the other bands' shirts. Ours are specially designed for EDGEfest wear and tear.

RICK THE TEMP: Is that right?

TREVOR: Yeah, we researched it because we were on EDGEfest last year, and we noticed that the t-shirts were looking a little wrinkly and not very good, so we designed -- and we can't really talk about it, but it's --

RICK THE TEMP: But they'll see them if they go to the show.

TREVOR: Yeah.

RICK THE TEMP: Limited Edition Econoline Crush t-shirts.

TREVOR: Oh, yeah.

RICK THE TEMP: Do you have the sweaters out this time?

TREVOR: No sweaters just because it's a little warm.

RICK THE TEMP: Right. Anyway, how about you guys? Are you guys going to be doing anything different? Are you going to be trying to like, avoid bands when you're out there? Like those smelly guys from Sloan?

TREVOR: Yeah, those Sloan guys. They better bathe this time around! Yeah, there's a lot of troublemakers that aren't going to be out there this year.

RICK THE TEMP: Aren't going to be?

TREVOR: Yeah. There's a few troublemakers that were there last year. But then they brought back The Tea Party, which are -- those guys, you've got to watch out for them. We're on early and they don't really come out until it's dark.

RICK THE TEMP: So you'll be gone before they get out?

TREVOR: Yeah, so we're safe.

RICK THE TEMP: But actually you can't go anywhere because isn't it like a convoy sort of thing where you all --

TREVOR: We all travel together...

RICK THE TEMP: So you have to wait until they're done, right?

TREVOR: Yeah. And they acrually play that song while we drive down the highway... \M Convoy \M no, that never happens. But yeah, I think we'll be out of there early. But it's going to be crazy! We did some shows in the states with the Foo Fighters and with Green Day, and Green Day have been lighting things on fire on stage...

RICK THE TEMP: They have been, yeah. I saw them down in Washington, and they set the whole stage on fire.

TREVOR: Yeah. It's actually quite a show!

RICK THE TEMP: I guess it is down there. I don't think the Americans mind. We didn't mind it. It was a great show. But I'm hoping that they do that up here as well because it's something to see --

TREVOR: Yeah.

RICK THE TEMP: That's for sure.

TREVOR: When they light stuff on fire, yeah.

RICK THE TEMP: So let's talk about -- you just released this in the states? just recently?

TREVOR: Yeah. Like, I think it's been out now two months in the states.

RICK THE TEMP: And how are things going?

TREVOR: Great, really good. We've been doing kind of -- there's been a lot of -- there's actually one thing called The EDGEfest, but lots of radio festival things that we've been doing, so we've been playing with bands like Crystal Method, Blink 182, Spacehog, all kinds of stuff. And just doing these -- Big Wreck... we see those guys all the time. So we're doing a lot of those festival dates and then some of our own, and the reception has been great.

RICK THE TEMP: Very good. Good to get that exposure down there as well with all the different bands because their fans will come out and see you guys... that's very, very good. I'm going to bring this up... hopefully I won't embarrass you, but lots of girls out there are liking the looks. You're a very stylin' dude. Are you considering yourself a sex symbol? I see the floor director here looking at you.

TREVOR: (Laughing) Sex symbol? A symbol? No, that's kind of weird. I mean --

RICK THE TEMP: Some sort of symbol, anyway.

TREVOR: Some kind of symbol, like "stop"; I could be that, or "yield".

RICK THE TEMP: But there's millions and millions -- like, I'm always getting calls on my line, "Can you play more Econoline Crush? We want to see Trevor..."

TREVOR: I have a big, extended family. That's what it is. Come on, Mom! Stop calling, you're embarrassing me. But I guess -- yeah, it's a good thing, I mean -- I think. I don't know.

RICK THE TEMP: Yeah, it's tough to answer that question.

TREVOR: Yeah, what do you say to that?

RICK THE TEMP: We've got a signal going up here. I'm going to talk -- let's talk about the music. We want to talk about the music on this. You do the writing?

TREVOR: I do the lyrics and write with Rob and Ziggy.

RICK THE TEMP: Okay. Any inspirations? I mean, what inspires you?

TREVOR: Life stuff, you know? Like, basically any kind of event that happened to myself or my friends. It's whatever I'm kind of thinkin about at the time that we start writing.

RICK THE TEMP: Very cool. Home is the video that we're going to be playing, but it's a new version, a U.S. version...

TREVOR: Yeah.

RICK THE TEMP: Is there much of a difference?

TREVOR: There's quite a bit of difference. They wanted to have it more of a live kind of video, where it was more band stuff and less of the -- basically, they took out all the stuff that was painful, me flying above the car...

RICK THE TEMP: Oh, man!

TREVOR: I know! That was a lot of fun but also quite painful. So they took that out. So it's a new band version. I like it. I think it's fun.

RICK THE TEMP: I say we check it out. Good meeting you, man, officially this time. Have fun on the EDGEfest. Again, beginning in Ottawa, June 29th. MuchMusic will have that all for you. Let's go to the U.S. version. This is "Home", Econoline Crush, right now on MuchMusic. Thanks, man. (Playing video)
