Bernie Worrell & the WOO Warriors

At the Wetlands, NYC (With Funk-Kin) 'Twas a funky, funky night at the Wetlands--a night for two heavy-duty funk groups, Funk-Kin and Bernie Worrell & The WOO Warriors. Both groups sounded better than before. Funk-Kin started performing around 9:40pm for about 5 minutes when they had to stop....I assume because of problems with the sound equipment. The group members left the stage and not one Funk-Kin note was played till 30 minutes later. In the meantime, I was talking to Stozo The clown about the hemp hats that he was selling (on the front, there is a cartoon of Bernie Worrell riding a dragon, and on the back, the name BERNIE WORRELL & THE WOO WARRIORS is printed). I asked if I could smoke one of those hats and he showed me the warning label: DO NOT SMOKE THIS HAT!! For added fun, when someone purchased one of those hats, I asked Stozo (in front of the customer) if the customer could be arrested for possession. Stozo replied to the customer, "And you won't be arrested for possession!" Then, he turned to me and said (humorously), "Thank you, David!" By the way, I picked up the Bernie Worrell FREE AGENT CD for $18.00 and the CD kicks serious ass!! Some WOO-derful meaty, funky-jazz numbers, like "Hope is Here", "Re-Enter Black Light (Entersection)" and "WOO Awakens, The Wizard Cometh". THIS IS THE WAY BERNIE WOOS WITH YOU!! Well, Funk-Kin came back at 10:15pm and performed mostly songs that they put together, not so many P-Funk covers. They performed "The Goose", "Mothership Connection" and their own funky tune "The Funk Done Gone Hip-Hop". Donald Banks (in the SCREAM mask and cape) played on keyboards mounted on the audience floor. As I mentioned before, Funk-Kin sounded tighter than before!! This time, Charlie Rivers provided some vocals to the funky stew, accompanied by Nathan Shider, Roxanne Yery, Nowell Haskins, and Keith Thomas. The grooves just went on and on and on....till the break of .... 11:30pm! (Oh well!) By the way....Nate, I'm sorry about calling you Tim....must have been an overload of funk in my brain!! To the Funk-Kin manager, Winky: WAT UP, MAN?! IT HIP ON THE FUNK-KIN SHIP!! Or as I told Charlie Rivers: Y'ALL FUNKIER THAN SEVEN CANS OF WET MAGIC SHAVE......I know that's 2 cans less, but it's still funky!!! At 12:15am, the WOO Warriors began WOO-ing the audience with the funk-jazz piece "Re-Enter Black Light (Entersection)".....an excellent masterpiece, written by Bernie Worrell. Bernie removed his WOO hat to show off his baldness (a very different look for Dr. WOO)!! B. J. Nelson was looking and sounding extra-wonderful.....I told her so after the set. The WOO songs performed were: Re-Enter Black Light (Entersection) Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself Red Hot Momma Y-Spy If You Don't Like The Effects, Don't Produce The Cause Straight Ahead Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication Comin' Round The Mountain Baby I Owe You Something Good Can You Get To That? Tear The Roof Off The Sucker The Mask Smokey Cosmic Slop ENCORE: Night of The Thumpasorus Peoples Mike Rubin's guitar was sounding extra-tight that night, especially during portions of "The Mask".......GO AHEAD, MIKEY!!! Also, Van Romaine was in seriously rare form during "The Mask".....the man was drumming so fast that I thought his heart would explode! DAMN!! Greg Fitz was excellent on "Smokey" and, of course, I LOVE the WOO performance of "Cosmic Slop". The WOO show ended at 2:30am.
