Limitations

One major limitation with this type of research was the lack of available literature about similar studies. Of all the studies cited by authors of NDE books and articles, only three were available to access in this area. Of those three, only two were relevent to this study, and only one was directly applicable (Noyes' article). Rogo's article was then added to the literature, as it summarizes and reviews research to date. Hunter's article was kept, as it presents a valid argument for the NDE as a psychological experience, and since, to some extent, it supports Noyes' theory of the "self" dissociating from the body as a defense against the threat of death.

A second problem with this study was the sampling. Since there was such a low percentage of the population who may have had a near-death episode, it was necessary to draw a sample which would be large enough for the NDE itself to be used as a variable. Taking into consideration that only 6-10% of the respondents in the studies reviewed by Rogo had experienced a near-death episode, it was decided that a sample of at least 200 would be necessary to have a large enough sample of experients with which to test the hypotheses. Due to limited time and money, It was decided that a non-probability sample would be the least resource-consuming. This became a purposive sample, in that the Forum classes were targeted as having the largest number of students available at a given time, and a "captive audience" sample, as they were surveyed at the beginning of each class.

Had more time and money been available, there would have been more of an effort made to have a higher percentage of respondents 33 years and older. This would have necessarily been a purposive sample, but it could easily have been accomplished by sampling the university teaching staff. By including the staff, the educational level may have shown some effect on Near Death Experience, and would definately have added some verisimilitude to the sample group. If this were done, the ratio would have been 3:1, with 150 students and 50 staff. This would lower the 17-32 age group from 94% to 75%, and might then have had some effect on the reationship age had with the other variables in this study.

Another change would have been to define the term "Protestant" on the questionnaire as "any Christian religion other than Catholic," as it was debatable whether many of the respondents who answered "Other" reaalized what "Protestant" meant. If most of the "Others" were really Protestants, it would have changed the data enough, perhaps, to conclude that there were no significant differences between Protestants and Catholics with regard to beliefs.

Were these changes implemented, and another study done, it may be that this study's hypotheses would be supported. However, much more time would be needed in order to determine causality, especially when studying the effects of religiousness on beliefs. It is quite possible that for those who experienced a near-death episode, the experience itself affected religiousness and/or beliefs. A more in-depth study would need to be made, perhaps even comparing the beliefs of those who have experienced NDEs with those who have not. This study could only really be considered an exploratory study, as it has discovered many other possible causal variables which were not considered when this study was conceived and begun.

There was a statistically significant relationship between a person's religion and religiousness and his/her belief of the cause of NDEs. The association was moderate, with a Cramer's V of .21. Thirty-nine percent of devout Catholics believed that NDEs were caused by the soul leaving the body, compared to 32% of devout Protestants and 13% of devout Others. This was a strong 26% points difference. The majority (one-third) of devout Catholics and Protestants believed the soul was the ause of NDEs, while most (one-fourth) devout Others belived that a lack of oxygen to the brain (anoxia) was the cause. Of those who were not devout, 0% of Catholics, Protestants, and Others believed the soul was the cause. ________________________________________________________
