Is A Crime" Web-Zine
WHAT IS YOUR NAME, HOW OLD ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU DO FOR THE
BAND?
BK: 20 bass and vocals
AARON: 17 lead guitar and vocals
ERIC: 21 rhythm guitar
TOM: 19 drums
IN WORDS, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE MUSIC OF PEA SHOOTER?
BK: We play pop punk, rock-n-roll something like that.
TOM: Rock-n-Roll
PEA SHOOTER'S MUSIC SOUNDS A LOT LIKE A LOOKOUT RECORD'S BAND. WHY
DO
YOU THINK THIS IS SO?
BK: That's mainly what we listen to I guess that might influence us
some. We didn't really try to sound like anybody that's just sort of
how
it came out. I can't stand all those yelling hardcore bands they all
suck and sound the same of course I've heard the same about pop bands.
I
also like a lot of like sixties music. We love the Beach Boys you've
just gotta I mean catchy love songs about girls what else is there? I
don't really get all these badass guys that sing dorky songs about the
government and stuff I mean I don't really give a rats arse about that
stuff. I wake up everyday thinking about girls and all through my day
I'm thinking about girls and when I go to sleep you guessed it
girls, girls, girls. I can't imagine that those guys dream about the
government when they go to sleep and stuff that would just suck. It's
just sort of go with what you know and I know I love girls so that's
what we sing about.
TOM: I don't know?
DO YOU THINK THERES A CHANCE LOOKOUT RECORDS WILL PICK YOU GUYS UP
ON
THEIR LABEL?
ERIC: No.
TOM: They'd better.
BK: I guess anythings possible but I don't really see it happening any
time soon. I mean I'd love to be on Lookout like I said that's what we
mainly listen to and stuff but I doubt we're ready for that sort of
thing yet.
HOW DID PEA SHOOTER COME TO BE?
BK: The band formed about 2 and half years ago because me, Eric, and
Tom
just were bored and wanted something to do. So Eric went out and bought
a guitar and I got a bass and neither one of us knew anything about
playing, Tom had played drums in school so he had a little experience
but we all really started from scratch. but then of course there's
Aaron
he was only 15 when he joined us and he was by far the most talented
and
still is.
WHERED YOU GET YOUR BAND'S NAME FROM?
BK: We were just driving around one day after we had been playing for
awhile and we decided we needed a name so we all threw out some ideas,
Eric suggested Pea Shooter and well nobody could think of anything
better so it just stuck.
WHAT LABEL ARE YOU ON?
BK: We're on Imperfekt Records from Columbia, MD.
HOW DID YOU HOOK UP WITH THEM?
BK: We got an e-mail from Chris from the Turdz and he wanted to met us
and maybe play some shows. So we went over to their place it was a sort
of met and greet thing they played for us and we played for them. we
actually we screwed up really bad we where using there stuff and I
don't
know we just plain sucked but they said they liked it. We got to
talking
to them and they said the were on Imperfekt and had a cd coming out
soon
and that we should talk to Chris the guy from Imperfekt about playing
shows and maybe recording something. So any way they gave Chris our
demo
tape he liked it and then me and Aaron went to see the Turdz play a
show
and we got to talking to Chris. He was like "yeah I liked your tape we
should do a 7 inch or something". So then a little later we play a show
with the Turdz and both the Turdz and Chris are like hey that was a lot
better then that tape. I guess enough people seemed to like it cause by
the time we did our second show with the Turdz Chris was like forget
the
7 inch we'll do a tape or something and then be our third show it was
forget that we're gonna do a cd. So I guess that's were we're at now
our
first cd came out the 7th on Imperfekt and it's a lot better then our
demo tape.
GIVE ME A COMPLETE DISCOGRAPHY OF ALL YOUR ALBUMS AND STUFF.
BK: Summer of 97' we recorded our demo tape at this little local
studio. It had 7 songs and no real name we just called it the demo tape.
we did it ourselves, it cost us over $500 to make and by the time we
got
done giving them away to friends and sending them out to lables and
stuff we only sold about half of them I figure we lost $450 but it was
fun we met a lot of new people and most of all it was a learning
experience. Summer of 98' we recorded for our cd with Imperfekt. It was
a lot of fun we were a lot more relaxed and stuff in the studio. We did
hand claps on "waiting for here" that was funny, there's four of us
standing in a padded room clapping into this mic. To tell you the
trueth
that clap thing took up more time then recording some of the music but
it sounds cool in the song and it was fun so... Oh yeah the cd's self
titled we couldn't decide on a name so we just didn't give it one.
WHAT IS THE BEST PLACE YOU'VE EVER PLAYED A SHOW?
BK: We used to play this little record store called "the Sound
Exchange"
in Ellicot City, MD but for some reason they're not allowed to have
shows their any more I guess that was my favorite.
Aaron: My favorite is the Blue Star in Lancaster PA.
HOW HAS THE PUNK MUSIC SCENE CHANGED YOUR MUSIC OR LIFESTYLE?
BK: Well I guess I wouldn't be here talking to you if I weren't for
punk, that and my whole attitude on life has changed but that's about
it.
ANY VEGANS OR STRAIGHT EDGERS IN THE BAND?
BK: No.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF PUNK KIDS WHO ARE VEGANS OR STRAIGHT
EDGERS?
BK: I think they're stupid. I mean meat it's what for dinner, I have no
idea why anybody wouldn't eat meat, that's just plain retarded, and the
other thing well I don't do drugs but you don't see me bragging about
it, those bunch of cry babies.
ERIC: Eating vegetables is murder.
TOM: Who cares?
AARON: I look at it this way the more vegans, the more meat for us.
OTHER THAN THE FACT THAT YOU THINK "MEAT IS WHAT'S FOR DINNER" CAN
YOU NOT RESPECT THEIR (VEGANS) CAUSE? I MEAN BILLIONS AND BILLIONS OF
ANIMALS ARE SLAUGHTERED EVERYDAY FOR FASCIST CORPORATE MULTINATIONAL
COMPANIES JUST SO THEY CAN SELL GREASY BURGERS. NO MATTER HOW YOU
SLICE
IT, MEAT IS MURDER.
BK: I don't think I really know what their cause is actually I don't
think most of them do either any time I ask somebody like that why they
don't eat meat they just say "meat is murder" what a cop out. I don't
beleive animals have souls or any crap like that. People always say
stuff like "well how would you like to be killed just so somebody can
have a cheeseburger" I think the main point they forget is I'm not a
cow. Cows where put here just so I could have a cheeseburger and I
think
it would make GOD mad if I didn't use what he gave me. I just watched
something about people using domesticated cat and dog fur to make
coats,
I don't really have a problem with that if they'd do it right. they
showed pictures of like 40 cats in a small cage, that's stupid, like I
said cows were made for eatin' cats were made for pets that's just how
it is. if they'd get the fur off like the dogs and cats from the pound
that were gonna die anyhow or like set up a dead pet drop off box thing
where you could take your pet instead of wasting all that grade A fur
by
dumping in in your back yard that'd be alright but raising kitty cats
and puppys just so you can sell a jacket now that's not right. However
if they got the fur from China where they eat cats and dogs. I think
that'd be ok cause I mean their gonna kill the thing anyhow my-as-well
use all of it. Oh I'm sorry I sort of got off the topic there anyhow
cows are barnyard animals not pets so I don't feel at all bad about
eating a big juicy steak. Of course the Chinese probably wouldn't feel
to bad about eating my cat so who's to say who's right, not me I'll
tell
you that. To be totally truethfull Pea Shooter don't give a crap, if
anyone would not buy a Pea Shooter cd just becuase I like to eat cows I
think that's stupid. Well I've gone on enough about that I think, next
question.
WHAT'S BETTER, PLAYING SHOWS IN CANADA OR PLAYING SHOWS IN THE
USA?
BK: We've never played in Canada but I don't think I could sing our
songs in Canadianese. We actually have some songs on this compilation
from this little label called No Name Records, they're from Canada but
I
guess they can understand Americanese.
DO YOUR MOMS LOVE YOU GUYS?
BK: Yep.
ERIC: Do you love my mom?
AARON: Eric has an unusual close bond with BK's mom.
ERIC, TELL YOUR MOM TO STOP CALLING ME. WHAT DO YOU GUYS TRY AND
ACCOMPLISH IN YOUR BAND, WHAT DO YOU STAND FOR?
BK: We don't stand for much, we don't even like standing if we don't
have to.
ERIC: Me, myself, and I and bowling.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOW AND IF YOU COULD BE A CHARACTER ON IT,
WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
BK: The Simpsons it's the best tv show ever made. I also like "That
Seventies Show" too it's great. Fox sunday night the Simpsons and then
"That Seventies Show" the best hour on tv the whole week. what
character
would I want to be? I was gonna say Principle Skinner just because Miss
Crabobpple is so sexy but I'll have to go with HOMER. He's the best so
so lazy and he agrees with me about the whole meat thing, he'd never
turn down food of any kind and he did just ate his own pet lobster "Oh
I
wish Pinchy we're here".
ERIC: Simpsons, Barney, you know why.
TOM: Simpsons.
WHAT ARE SOME COOL BANDS THAT YOU KNOW OR HAVE MET?
BK: We know the Turdz we play with them a lot and we know a couple
other
bands just from going to shows and stuff. We talked to the guys in
Squirtgun one time they were playing this show in Philly with the Teen
Idols they rocked but the little local Philly bands sucked ass, we
really don't know anybody.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE BANDS?
BK: The Ramones, the Queers, Screeching Weasel, Riverdales, MTX,
Hi-Fives, Squirtgun, the Lillingtons, the Beatnik Termites and a bunch
of others I can't think of.
TOM: Ramones.
FAVORITE ZINES?
BK: I don't really read much but every now and then if I find a local
zine I'll skim through it.
TOM: VW Trends and Hot VW's.
AARON: Buisness Week.
WHAT TYPE OF INSTRUMENTS DO YOU GUYS USE TO GET THE PEA SHOOTER
SOUND?
BK: Peavey bass amp and a Shure mic.
TOM: Tama.
AARON: Gibson Explorer (a very sweat axe), and Marshall amp.
WHAT ARE THE FUTURE PLANS NOW FOR PEA SHOOTER?
BK: Well we want to see how well people like the cd and stuff but we've
been told that if we want to do another we can so maybe we'll do
another
cd next year or something. We are looking to do a tour this summer down
the east coast and we're still looking for places to play so if you
know
any let us know.
TOM- $$$
WELL IF YOU COME TO OTTAWA I CAN TELL YOU A BUNCH OF PLACES. MY
FAVORITE IS THE LIQUID MONKEY IN DOWNTOWN OTTAWA.
BK: Imperfekt is really setting most of it up. Chris just told us who
we'd be touring with but I forget. He let us listen to their cd or tape
or something they sounded pretty cool. I think we're gonna go up to New
York and then work our way down the east side. I really can't give that
many details cause I really don't know that much myself, If you can get
us a show go to the Imperfekt page and let them know or talk to us.
GOT ANY FREE SHIT FOR US?
BK: We have some stickers we made ourselves and a few t-shirts left but
that's it.
ERIC: What are we whores? (Do you really want the truth? -Prawker).
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE INFAMOUS THOUGHT IS A CRIME WEBZINE?
BK: It's pretty cool, seems to be well organized better then some I've
seen but like I said I don't really read them I usually just look for
pictures.
ANY LAST THOUGHTS OR QUOTES?
BK- I'm gonna quote you the price of the cd 10 bucks how's that?
