Oconee vs. Newton
The story of this game had to be Newtons QB Kerry Gilstrap. Well, that may have been the story before the game. The Oconee defense shut down the allusive Gilstrap and won. 31-7.
The game started out with some suprises by the Warriors. Oconee started on offense, and the Warriors opened up with a no-huddle. But, Newton shut it down 3 and out. When Newton was on offense, Gilstrap rolled right, cut back, juked a couple Warriors, and ran 45 yards down the field. He then hit Quent Thomas for a 10 yard touchdown pass. As it would end up, that was all Newton would score, and that was about all Gilstrap would get.
Oconee went 3 and out and punted to the Ram 10 yard line. Then as Gilstrap tried to scramble into the Warrior endzone, the was sacked by a whole host of Warriors. Oconee got the ball on the freekick. Clayton Matthews then hit Like Bishop on a short pass out in the flats. Bishop broke a couple of tackles and ran 44 yards for a touchdown. Matthews then hit Bishop for the 2 point conversion. Then, in the 2nd quarter, Matt Lavender scored on an 18 yard run, and Matthews hit Bishop again for 14 yards. The Warriors went into halftime leading 24-7.
The 2nd half was dominated by the Warriors. Although they only scored 1 TD, an 8 yard run by Bishop, the defense totally shut down Gilstrap. He ended up 8-18 for 96 yard with 1 interception. Matthews was 6-10 for 106 yards and 1 interception.
Newton had some very good athletes, but their lack of team unity and dirty playing cost them in this game, and will later on in the season.
