Oconee vs West Hall
Oconee exploded for 35 2nd quarter points as the Warriors demolished the Spartans 49-0 Friday night in Oakwood.
It started in the 2nd Quarter when QB Clayton Matthews had a beautiful 30 yard run. The play started right, and when seeing he had nowhere to go, he cut back against the grain and outran everyone to the left. Then the Warriors regained possession and Luke Bishop had a 1 yard run. Then 2 minutes later, Tyson Browning scored on a 48 yard run. Then, the Warriors lined up regularly for the kickoff, but Clayton kicked an onside toward the Oconee sideline. It was recovered by the Warriors. Bishop scored another TD this time on a 16 yard run. The Spartans couldnt get anything going, and punted just before halftime. On the last play of the half, Matthews hooked up with Justin Jackson on a 26 yard pass. The PAT by Matthews was good, and the Warriors led at halftime 35-0.
The 2nd half saw Oconee play a lot of younger players, but still preserved the shut out. Luke Bishop, on his only offensive series of the half, scored his 3rd TD on a 65 yard run. Then the JV and freshman played the rest of the way.
Still they preserved the shutout, and 9th grader Chris Reese recovered a blocked punt in the endzone to end the scoring for the Warriors.
The reason for the explosion in points in the 2nd quarter, maybe in part due to the officials. There were some very questionable calls in the game. Oconee had 15 peneltys for 130 yards to West Halls 4. At one point, the officials repeatedly came over to the Oconee sideline and told players to get into the players box. They were already in the box, and when the Oconee coaches tried to argue this, they were threatened with ejection. The coaches started yelling at the players to get them hyped up and it worked. Oconees sideline was just pure noise for most of the game following that incident.
Oconee now moves to 3-0 for only the 4th time in the schools history.
