Clumsy
(home)

The band's second disk, Clumsy,  was also released in Canada on Sony Music, January 21, 1997. Three months later, on April 11th, it was released in the U.S. on Columbia Records. Nine times platinum in Canada, (over 900,000 sold), 600,000 in the U.S., and over 2 million sold worldwide, the band has surpassed the sophomore jinx, overcoming sales of their hit first album, Naveed. It was produced and mixed, by choice,  in a the grungy Arnyard Studios, in Toronto's west end. Again, the band worked with "the fifth member", Arnold "Arn" Lanni. To aid in the inspiration of Clumsy, which took 7 months to record, Raine, Mike, Duncan and Jeremy locked themselves in a cottage north of Toronto, far away from distractions, for 6 weeks. For the artwork, the band worked again with their good friend Saul Fox, also on the cover of Naveed. The name Clumsy was chosen because it has a positive, forgivable connotation.

"Everyone is bitter and angry and they have this angst nowadays, but they don't know what they are angry at. When someone says something, people can tend to automatically take it as a slight but if we say that person isn't trying to be mean, they are just a little clumsy, the word gives the inherant ability to forgive and so we liked it," -Mike Turner
.
"We must sell alternative albums. If you see someone do an act that maybe causes harm to someone, it's not necessarily out of spite or out of anger. It could possibly be because they are clumsy. Clumsy was just sort of more compassionate word and feeling that sort of summed it up. We were all just sort of sick of seeing fabricated angry bands."  -Duncan Coutts
.
"You can be destructive with out being malicious if you're clumsy. With the problems that I encounter, they're obviously not unique. Everyone goes through he same things I go through, so I think 'clumsy' was just a word that would give those problems the benefit of the doubt and then enable you to get through them rather than seeing them just from one perspective [like], 'O.K., it's bad. It's not going to change from being bad.' Because things DO change. People change" ... "It's really honest. The lyrics really match the song in that there are a lot of different colours and stuff, just as [with] personalities." - Mike Turner and Raine Maida

The singles released from this album are in order as follows:
"We did so many demos and different versions of the songs. So many colours. I think the record took longer because we were doing that, experimenting, whereas if we were to take the first version of every song, it wouldn't have been as dynamic. There's a lot of different textures on this record, compared to the other one, in terms of spaces and tempos. There's some slower stuff and there's some really, really aggressive stuff." - Raine Maida
