When I first listened to "X Japan Ballad Collection Best", it was really an ear-opener for me. I have heard many types of songs, ranging from types (classical, contemporary, R&B), languages (Chinese, English, Korean), anime (Tenchi Muyo!, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Magic Knight Rayearth, X) but never before have I encountered X Japan's style.
A little information on X Japan
Present Name: X Japan
Group members: Yoshiki(drum), Toshi(main singer), Hide(guitar), Pata(guitar) and Heath(Bass)
Formed in 1982 with the name X
1st album produced in 1988
2nd album produced in 1989(Name: Blue Blood)
Members start to produce their solo albums in 1992
Changed their name from X to X Japan in 1993
Although X Japan had been around for more than 10 years but I had only known about this band in 1998 when I surfed the Net for X(manga) and knew from other sites that the songs in X the movie were by X Japan. The midis were nice but I still have not encountered their music entirely.
However, only when I bought their album "X Japan Ballad Collection Best" and heard the songs did I realised what a fool I was for not trying to get to know their music earlier.
Their lyrics sounded strange when I heard it for the first time. I couldn't understand what was being sung so I looked at the lyrics. Then did I realise what a perfect match X Japan was for X the movie. If you notice above, X Japan's original name was not X Japan but was X. X songs in X the anime.
X is about the end of the world in 1999 which is being said in The Bible (although not in the same way). Take for example, Crucify my Love. Crucify means to kill (someone) by tying or nailing them to a cross and leaving them there to die (like Jesus). If you had seen how Kotori died, you would have noticed the similarity.
X Japan's lyrics are just so like the ugly side of man (ok, you may not think so but I do) and the despair experienced by many. Words like heartache, loneliness, shadows, wind cries, never trust in Crucify my Love strengthens it more.
Another example, Alive. I feel that it is about a person feeling lost in his/her own life, not knowing what to do but wants to get out of the 'prison', despair and betrayal (don't yawn, this is not a literature class).
X Japan information from X Japan Ballad Collection Best. These are my personal opinions, not anyone else's.
