The New Little Book

New Little Book CoverIn 2007, the Heights-Hillcrest-Lyndhurst Branch of the the American Association of University Women (AAUW) published a study guide entitled The New Little Book. It was written by Cleveland area teachers and members of the AAUW Branch.

The book covers all sections of the Ohio social studies graduation test: history, people in societies, geography, economics, government, citizenship and social studies skills and methods. Each section is set up as a mini study guide with its own glossary.

In September, 2007, the book was distributed free to students in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD). All tenth graders received books. Each eleventh or twelfth grader who had yet to pass the social studies section of the state's graduation test also received books. Each ninth grade social studies teacher in the CMSD will receive a set of books for the classroom. Funds from The Cleveland Foundation and The Gund Foundation supported the project.

The Little Book This book's forerunner was The Little Book, which was an important, far-reaching result of our tutors' work at John Hay High School.

The Little Book was a pocket-sized, paperback handbook designed to help students--particularly inner city students--handle the difficult hurdle of the old Ohio Ninth Grade Citizenship Test. The Ninth Grade tests were replaced with the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT).

The Little Book was drafted by a committee of Covenant tutors, former teachers, and a retired attorney. The book was prepared with the assistance of the Chairman of the Social Studies Department of John Hay High School, and it followed the Fact Sheets from the Ohio Department of Education regarding ninth-grade Citizenship requirements. Later, the Social Studies Chairman wrote and field-tested the Companion to The Little Book for Teachers and Tutors, which had dozens of practice questions for each topic.

In 1996, 27,500 copies of The Little Book and 400 copies of the Companion to The Little Book for Teachers & Tutors were furnished to Cleveland schools through a grant from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation. Another 2,100 copies of The Little Book were given to East Cleveland students as a gift from the Church of the Covenant. The Little Book was also purchased by several school districts.

Complete online versions of The Little Book and the Companion remain posted on this site because they may be of interest to teachers and students studying American government. Website statistics suggest that these guides are also used by adults studying for the naturalized U.S. citizenship test.
