Getting Your Music Out

My primary responsibility as your promotional representative will
be to obtain airplay exposure for your music on radio
and music video stations.

I achieve this goal with a two-stage approach. Initially, I will
compile information supporting the record to be promoted.
Next, I will approach the people who schedule radio and video
playlists with the compiled information in order to convince them to
play your song(s) from the record.

The research stage is a critical part of my job. As a record
promotor,I begin by collecting internal information about the
band, including the press kit, video footage, and other
promotional material. I may also gather sales information that
demonstrates the success of the record within certain regions or
among certain groups of consumers. I may speak with record store
representatives or other record promoters about consumer trends to
build evidence that your record will be a hit.

Once I have developed a case in support of your record, I will bring
this information to program directors and disc jockeys
with the hope of securing airplay. If possible, this presentation
will be made in person. In addition to the formal pitch, a I may
invite key programming staff to dinner, parties, or a live
performance of the band in order to further present your case
in a casual atmosphere.

When interpersonal interaction is not feasible, either because the
radio market is too far away or too small to warrant a
personal visit, I may use the telephone or mail to present your
case to potentially interested programming personnel.
