ECAC Beat Writer Article #3

THE PUCK STOPS HERE.

by Valerie Fristachi

Well, my article about the ECAC’s new Final Five format is still in the works, I still have some research to do. So, here’s my weekly (sorta) report on what’s going on in the ECAC:

The "Thank-You-Sir-May-I-Have-Another" Award: (tie) Colgate 7, UVM 0 and RPI 7, Dartmouth 1

When Thompson Arena cheers for something in common, you know it’s good. The Red Raiders sent the mount-a-Cats licking their wounds last weekend in a big shutout. The team who was ranked first last pre-season is having their tails handed to them so far, and the squad who has inspired countless fans to drone "WEIDER!" is really showing early promise. This is going to be an interesting season for ‘Gate.

Meanwhile, just the week before, RPI pummeled the Big Green into a harsh loss. This can be written off for Dartmouth as a still-wet-behind-the-ears, it’s-only-the-second-game-of-the-season loss, but Dartmouth’s offense is looking very weak and may prove to plague the Big Green for the rest of the season.

The "What the F*** just Happened?" Award: Cornell’s come-from-behind win over Brown, 4-3.

I wish I hadn’t left Lynah, but from the sounds of my friend’s Walkman blaring, I could tell the place was jumping. What was so incredible about this win was that the tying and winning goals were scored in the last minute and ten seconds of the game. What shocks me even more was that this was against Brown. Which leads me to…..

The "Huh?" Award: Cornell, after the excruciating Brown game (see above) and somewhat disappointing 1-1 tie to Vermont-especially one day after the Colgate routing of the Gutt’, has advanced in the national polls from 7th to 6th.

Okay, there are two uninjured veteran defensemen, the co-captain got a good roughing up in the Dartmouth game, the other co-captain is trying really hard to be a figurehead on the team and is making fundamental mistakes in the process, Vinnie Auger, one of the star forwards, is out for a seemingly minor back injury, and the Big Red has not been able to light the lamp on the power play, yet they moved up a notch. Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge Red fan and they are one of the only remaining undefeated teams left in all of NCAA hockey. I think that the team has the potential to go even further than last year, but right now, it seems to me that the engine is still revving. Things that make you go hmmmmm…….
