The Bottom 10 (2/9/99)

Fairfield and Union seem to be well entrenched at the top of the Bottom
Ten. Last week's Bottom Ten teams struggled to a 6-13-2 record, with
CCHA teams making the most noise. Western Michigan, number three last
week, falls to number five after losing their coach and then beating Alaska-Fairbanks
and Bowling Green this last weekend. Merrimack pushes its way into the
Bottom Ten for the first time this year, based upon losses to BU and Mass-Amherst.
On the international hockey scene, Army beat the Paladins of the Royal
Military Academy of Canada to extend its unbeaten streak to 12 in this
cross-the-border rivalry. Key matchups this week include Alaska-Fairbanks
at Miami, Dartmouth at Union, and Army at Mass-Amherst.

1. Fairfield (1-19-0, 1-22-0) The losses continue, this time to Holy Cross.

2. Union (1-11-2, 3-18-3) Managed a tie with Harvard. Their only conference
win was an overtime affair with RPI on November 20, 1998.

3. Sacred Heart (5-15-1, 5-17-1) Two losses to American International
moves them up.

4. UNO (6-21-0) Won a pair of exhibition games against the University
of Manitoba Bison. Too bad they don't count.

5. Western Michigan (4-13-6, 5-16-6) They had their best weekend of the
season, so they have to drop a couple of places.

6. (tie) Minnesota-Duluth (3-14-3, 6-19-3) A loss and tie at Alaska-Anchorage
keeps them at number six. In Saturday's 0-0 tie, goaltender Tony Gasparini
had 36 saves.
Air Force (12-15-1) Lost to Denver and Mankato State. Interesting
matchup with MAAC power Quinnipiac next weekend.

8. Michigan Tech (7-15-0, 7-20-1) No victories during Winter Carnival this year.

9. Alaska-Fairbanks (5-18-1, 8-19-1) Lost to number 5 Western Michigan as
well as Notre Dame.

10. (tie) Mass-Amherst (3-11-2, 6-16-2) Lost a game to Boston College.
Miami (5-13-4, 7-16-5) Idle.
Merrimack (5-11-1, 9-17-1) Their collapse continues as they stretch their
losing streak to eight.

Honorable Mention: Army (14-13-1), Dartmouth (3-10-1, 7-13-1),
Harvard (3-9-2, 8-10-2), LSSU (6-14-2, 7-18-3), Niagara (12-9-2).
