University of Roorkee has the distinction of being the first Engineering University in India. It was established by the U.P. Govt in 1948 in the framework of Roorkee University Act-1947. Soon after the University came into existence, need was felt to amend certain provisions in the Roorkee University Act. It has taken nearly four decades for the Act to be amended as the Uttar-Pradesh Roorkee University(Amendment)Act 1997. The amended Act has been made effective from May 1 ,1998. The main features of the amended Act are: a reduction in the size of the authorities of the University, namely, the Syndicate and the Senate. The size of the Syndicate is now 25 with 9 members from outside the University, against nearly 200 members before the amendment. The Academic Council and the Finance Committee are now among the authorities of the University. It is excepted that the above amendments will improve the administrative functioning of the University.
