There is no doubt that a well equipped kitchen is a valuable time-saver; the secret to obtaining this goal is twofold. First, you need a complete selection of basic kitchen tools, pans and everyday cooking utensils. Second, but equally important, is an organized system of storing and utilizing these items. By following these basic guidelines, you can maximize the space and effeciency of your kitchen.
Hi. My name is Julie VanVliet and I am an Independant Kitchen Consultant. I live with my husband, two daughters and several stray cats. I inherited my love of cooking from my Italian father, who believed that food was art. He felt that no matter how simple or complex the recipe, it should be lovingly prepared and enjoyed with good company and kind hearts. He didn't know a problem that could not be resolved over a meal.
The purpose of this section of my website is to pass on as much help and information as I can and to give netizens a fun and interactive kitchen/cooking tutorial.
I hope you enjoy my site and pick up some new tips. Please feel free to send me anything you think may be a good addition to one of the pages here, and I'll consider it.
Please answer the poll question so that I will get an idea of what type recipes and information you will need.
The Basics:
Organization: To allow yoursel the most amount of workspace, keep surfaces as clutter-free as possible. Only keep out the appliances you use most often, and put others away. Whenever practical, look into space saving appliances to free up counter space.
Store equipment close to where you are likely to use it. For example, a tool holder on your working surface or hooks above the stove to hold pots and pans.
Purchase*
Consider the purchase of kitchen tools as an investment. Concentrate on buying well made, durable equipment. Avoid the temptation to overstock your kitchen with low-quality substitutes and trendy gadgets.
Types of Equipment:
A well stocked kitchen has an ample supply of utensils, including spatulas, wooden spoons, ladles, serving spoons (with and without slots), wire whisks and tongs.
There are several tools which are indispensible for food preparation. Among them are a vegetable peeler, meat mallet, grater, garlic press, strainer, mixing bowls and measuring tools.
A complete set of knives is an absolute must. Your set should contain a paring knife, utility knife, carving knife and boning knife.
Your cookware collection should include several saucepans, metal and non-metal baking dishes of various sizes, 1 small skillet (6- to 8- inch), 1 or 2 large frying pans (10- to 12- inch) with covers and a Dutch oven or kettle with a lid.
A blender, electric mixer or food processor definitely comes in handy to today's home cook. While these appliances are not critical, they can increase efficiency by dramatically cutting preparation time.
Good to Know:
For cutting and chopping, a hardwood board is best. Never put hot items on a chopping block or eventually it will warp. Wood also will absorb food odors and pass it on to other foods; so reserve one side for preparing aromatic foods like garlic and onions; use the other side for non-odorous foods. Be sure to always clean a wood board with hot water and soap.
