The Howell family arrived in Lincoln County Tennessee from North Carolina (Surry County ?) prior to 1810. In the County Court records the earliest Howell record is dated 28 August 1810 when David Howell is made administrator of Joseph Howell's estate. The estate record indicates no wife or children, so it could be that Joseph is David's brother, but I believe he is his father. (Abstracts of Court Records and Wills, page 30)

Other Court records indicate that David Howell is active in the county, planning and overseeing road locations and serving a juror in the county court. In the Court records, 12 November 1814 (page 136), there is a listing of land tracts. These records show several tracts owned by David Howell, and one by Reese Howell. This record shows that the Howells' lived on Stewart Creek. Cemetery records (page 311) indicate Howell burials in Old Community Cemetery which was near the Stewrt Creek Baptist Church.

On 11 June 1815, Mary Howell, David's wife is made administratrix of his estate, followed by a related record in which Mary Howell is made guardian of their minor (under age 21) children: Catherine, John, David, James, Mary and Andrew B.Howell. (Page 184, 185) In the 1840 census, Mary Howell is listed as head of household and between 70 and 80 years of age.
