The VLSI Society of India, Goa Chapter, organized a workshop on VLSI and its Applications on the 24th February 2007. The venue of the workshop was Padre Conceicao College of Engineering, Verna, Goa.
The workshop focused on popularizing the field of VLSI in Goa and to provide an opportunity for the students to present their research, views, opinions and experiences in this specialized field. There were 96 participants for the workshop. Amongst the participants were scientists, technologists, industrialists, academicians and students from the state of Goa. Being a paper presentation competition, the workshop also subjected young engineering students to an influencing experience of technological professionalism and ideas in this rapidly elevating sphere of electronics. The papers had been selected after being reviewed by experts in the field of VLSI.
Dr. Chandrasekhar, Director, Directorate of Technical Education, Goa, also The Honorable Chief Guest of the day, lit the inaugural lamp along with the other dignitaries. Dr. Chandrasekhar briefed the audience about the advances and opportunities available in VLSI.
Mr. Sridhar, President, VSI Goa Chapter, briefed the audience about the objectives and significance of the VLSI Workshop and the planned future activities of VSI Goa chapter.

The day witnessed three tutorial sessions, five student presentations and a poster presentation session. The curtains were drawn by Captain A. V. Avadhanulu, Director, Research & Development, D-Link, Bangalore, whose key note address revolved broadly around VLSI from the perspective of Communication Engineering, a field about which he spoke with great authority and passion.
A tutorial session that followed the keynote address was based on the topic Advantages of using Verilog for Design and Verification by Mr.Nikhil Kamat Bambolkar of Persistent Systems, Goa., which was followed by paper presentations by the students and the poster session.
The Post lunch session witnessed two tutorial sessions, Design Challenges for VLSI Technology Scaling by Mr. Keshav Bhaktavatson, Texas Instruments, Bangalore India and Radio for Communication Systems by Mr. Anurag Nigam, Persistent Systems Ltd., Goa. Amongst the students paper presentations, the paper titled Interfacing and Control of Echo Sounder using Microcontroller and its Simulation bagged the Best Paper Award.
The members of the team included Akash Mohan, Milind Fernandes, Sarvesh Samant, Sheldon Fernandes and Vivek Rao, all students of BE(ETC), Padre Conceicao College of Engineering, Verna, Goa.
The workshop was an enlightening experience for all involved. Though a maiden venture for the VSI Goa chapter, it was meticulously organized and provided an opportunity to the students as well as professionals working in the areas related to VLSI and its applications to interact and discuss the latest developments in the field. The event was sponsored by VLSI Society of India and co-sponsored by Persistent Systems Pvt. Ltd., Verna- Goa & Padre Conceicao College of Engineering, Verna, Goa.
