Thomas Griffin, 95, is among the five remaining men of the 79 who flew with then-Lt. Col. James H. "Jimmy" Doolittle on his historic bombing mission over Japan on April 19, 1942. (Andrew S. Geraci/The Washington Times)                 Doolittle's Raiders Update

Maj. Thomas C. Griffin, a navigator during the historic Doolittle Raid of World War II who later survived nearly two years in a Nazi prison camp, died 2/26/13 at the age of 96.   Mr. Griffin’s passing leaves just four survivors of the mission: Edward Saylor, Richard Cole, Robert Hite and David Thatcher. In the years since the mission, the surviving Raiders have reunited each April 18. In 2012 Mr. Griffin joined three of them – Mr. Hite was too ill to attend – at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio as part of a dazzling 70th anniversary celebration that drew thousands of friends, family, military veterans, Chinese villagers who helped the Raiders elude capture, and survivors of the USS Hornet carrier. The Raiders final annual reunion was held in April 2013 in Fort Walton Beach where the Raiders trained for the attack.

Preceding his death in 1993, Lt. Col. James H. “Jimmy” Doolittle, who led the raid and flew the first of 16 B-25 bombers that took off from a Navy aircraft carrier, gave the surviving Raiders a bottle of 1896 Hennessy Cognac, the year he was born. The bottle was to be opened by the final two living Raiders but instead, the 4 survivors plan to have a special gathering later this year to share what will be the final toast.

 VPB-106 & VPB-102/14 Archives

At a point in time the squadrons donated their collections of memorabilia to the San Diego Air & Space Museum in San Diego.  These items are available for research in person in the museum’s basement archives.  Alan Renga, an archivist at the museum, is in the process of digitizing the squadrons’ collections and posting them on their online flickr account where viewers are allowed to comment on images.  This would be a great way to add identification to the pictures that are unlabeled, keeping the history of VPB-106 and VPB-102/14 as accurate as possible.  Please visit the website and identify what you can.

http://www.flickr.com.photos/sdasmarchives/

Search “VPB 106” or “VPB 102” on the home page.  You will need a flickr account to post your comments.

Also, Alan is putting together an album of printed pictures from VPB-106’s collection.  These will be at the Chicago Reunion in hopes of obtaining any information on the unidentified pictures from the members.   Alan will gladly send you a hi-res disc of the images from the collection by request.

VPB-102/14 Website

This website had not been updated for some time until recently.  Terry Dell, son of Amby Dell, was responsible for creating the website and its updating with the help of Bob Kirk (and others) supplying the data information.  Terry was unable to attend to the website for a period of time but is now back at it.  The website is now in the process of being updated, in particular the “Taps” and “Alumni Rooster” pages.  Take a peek at it and if you find anything that needs correcting, contact Lisa Kirk.

VPB-106 Website

NEW!!!  Since becoming a volunteer, Cheryl Kuklinski Carlson has been attempting to get a website going for VPB-106, and it is now in the early stages of development.  Susan Hayes, daughter of Richard Hayes, volunteered to create the website.  Now that the URL is established, Susan will need the squadron members to feed her the information that needs to be added to the site.  Susan’s email is susanhayes@optonline.net.

Squadron 106’s new baby can viewed at http://www.vpb106.com/
  VPB-106 is also on Facebook.

Naval Aviation Museum

The museum’s website contains VB-106’s flight log history.  The squadron is 1 of 36 posted on the site.  VPB-102/14 is not included in those posted.

A Soldier's Solute
Memoriam

With sincere regrets we wish to report that since our last newsletter we have received information that the following shipmates have passed away.  The great bond these men had that tied them together with their squadron members can never be broken.  They served their country, their squadron and their families in the highest tradition of the Navy.  May they rest in peace.

SCUTTLEBUTT

Bob Rupkey (106) – George Crocker has sent an $1,800 donation to the San Diego Air and Space Museum for the care of the VPB-106 history collection from past 106 squadron dues.  He will close out the old squadron account and will turn over the remaining 106/102/14 funds of $780 to the new Reunion group treasury for future newsletters, etc.  (see WEBSITES – “VPB-106 & VPB-102/14 Archives”)

Bob Rupkey (106) – This is a good handbook to have around when you might need it.  Just call  (877) 222-8387 and ask for a copy of Veterans Health Benefits Handbook, and they will send it out.  Tell your veteran buddies about it.

Art Canady (106) – Passed away 2/3/13.  Art AMM1C was the plane captain for Lt. McKoinis, VPB-106, Crew 20.  He had attended many reunions in the past.

Cheryl Carlson, daughter of Casey Kuklinski/Reunion Volunteer (102) – Sorry to say that for now I will not be able to attend to any more future newsletters.  Since the Abbott/AbbVie company split, I have been extremely busy with the reorganization of the new company.  I have felt at times overwhelmed trying to do the newsletter and keeping up with the paperwork involved.  So for now I will have to hand back the spreadsheet that contains all the mailing information to (volunteers) Lisa and Kathy.  In our last email we did reach out for more volunteers, and I hope someone else will step forward.

Luanne Croy, daughter of Allen Kazmaier (102) - I am Allen Kazmaier’s oldest daughter and would like to inform you of his new address.  He had a fall last June and broke his hip.  Dad was lucky, he was able to have the hip replaced and now just uses a walker.  He is now living back in Perrysburg (Ohio) in assisted living.  He is very much hoping to attend the reunion in August in Chicago.

Howie Ells (106) – In a letter to Cheryl Carlson… I received the CD of the New Orleans reunion and wish to thank you for that and all the other matters relative to the squadron which are being done in such a professional manner.  I put your name on my ‘Honey Do’ list every week to call or write but it never seems to get done and I do not know why.  All I can do is apologize for being so lax.  However, I did enjoy your tape and would wish that more would be able to attend as it is so meaningful to all of us.  I do have to say, however I had difficulty recognizing some of them without reading name tags.  This is not so in terms of Dombrowski!!  Who could miss him!!!  Also it was very apparent that the old geezers were pleasantly overtaken by the Andrews Sisters – It all looked like fun!  Which brings me to the point, I am not mobile (broken hip) and just wish I could join you in Chicago but I don’t think so.  My Steven made CD of the ’08 & ’09 Reunion which we handed out on Cape Cod.  Did you get one?  Anyway I am enclosing one which you may keep and would hope you enjoy it.  All for now, hope you can read this scribble (they bought me a new computer but I am not up to speed on it) but this did give me an opportunity to say thank you.

Blue Skies, Howie & Mag

Chuck Haddenham (102) – Per a phone call from the Haddenhams, they will not be able to attend the Reunion.  Chuck is in a wheelchair and Ruth Ann has a back injury.

Harold Robertson (102) – Harold called to say that he cannot make it to the Reunion as his wife cannot travel and he cannot leave her.

Wayne Restig (106) – Wayne has been suffering from the effects of shingles for months. We hope for an immediate recovery and to see his smiling face at the Reunion in August.  Wayne strongly suggests a shingles vaccination for anyone who has had chicken pox…you don’t want this.

Carol Zito, daughter of Joseph Zito (106) – Carol is looking to attend the Reunion in honor of her father who passed away February 4, 2013.  She would like to find a roommate to share the expense of a guest suite.  Anyone interested can contact Lisa Kirk who can hook you up.

Your fellow members appreciate hearing from you!
