28th Reunion

September 9 – 13, 2018

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Memorial Day

Last month was Memorial Day, a day created to remember our fallen men.  Casey Kuklinski emailed me the following story and I felt it was well worth sharing this fine example of honoring our soldiers.

About six miles from Maastricht, in the Netherlands, lie buried 8,301 American soldiers who died in "Operation Market Garden" in the battles to liberate Holland in the fall and winter of 1944.

Every one of the men buried in the cemetery, as well as those in the Canadian and British military cemeteries, has been adopted by a Dutch family who mind the grave, decorate it, and keep alive the memory of the soldier they have adopted.   It is even the custom to keep a portrait of "their" American soldier in a place of honor in their home.

Annually, on "Liberation Day," memorial services are held for "the men who died to liberate Holland." The day concludes with a concert.  The final piece is always "Il Silenzio," a memorial piece commissioned by the Dutch and first played in 1965 on the 20th anniversary of Holland's liberation.

It has been the concluding piece of the memorial concert ever since.

This year the soloist was a 13-year-old Dutch girl, Melissa Venema, backed by Andre Rieu and his orchestra (the Royal Orchestra of the Netherlands).  This beautiful concert piece is based upon the original version of taps and was composed by Italian composer Nino Rossi.

There are many American military cemeteries in foreign countries all over the world with servicemen who gave their lives for freedom at home and abroad.  Here are some of the cemeteries in Europe and the number of graves within them.

SCUTTLEBUTT

Charlie Baker (106) – Sorry I’m late getting this to you.  Thanks for all that you do for us.  Maybe we can attend some of the things that you and others do for the flying people.

David Fisher (106) – Just a note to say hello.  I am 92, be 93 in October.  I don’t know anyone in VPB-106 living.  (Todd) Mabry was the last of my Crew 8 except me.  I try to keep busy with my ball club.  Unable to play.  I just watch.  If you know anyone in VPB-106 living I would like to hear from them.  My address is David Fisher|4391 Locust St. N.E.|St Petersburg, FL 33703.  Have enclosed a couple of my crazy pictures and once again thanks for all you do.

Jeff Fletcher, son of Al Fletcher (106 – Crew 1) - I spoke with George Crocker a few weeks ago.   He was very congenial and well spoken. We spoke for 30 minutes but it could easily lasted much longer.  As I took some notes, the following points became very clear to me:  1) The Privateer= He mentioned the Privateer was a very maneuverable air craft due to its enormous tail. It flew like a fighter and could dog fight with the best of them.  2) My father= He remembered my father practicing aerial bombing using smoke bombs on floating targets in the Salton Sea in California.  3) Missions= The biggest fear of the airmen was running out of fuel. Missions would often take them 1000 miles from base, and if the aircraft was engaged in a dog fight, you may not have enough fuel to return home.  4) His memory= For someone like myself that cannot remember what I did last week, George's recall of details 70 years ago was stunning. He recalls enemy aircraft approaching from the rear and remembering the proper response. Note: If you turn into the aircraft, the enemy could end up <30 ft on top of you, which is what happened with Crew I on one occasion. You always turn away from the approaching aircraft! He recalls Crew I escorting Admiral McCain in the final days of the war. Admiral McCain (Senator McCain's father) died 4 days after the surrender of Japan. George ended the conversation with the statement "It happened many years ago, yet it seemed like it happened yesterday."  It was an interesting perspective talking with someone that flew in WWII with my father (years before I was born). For a brief moment I felt like I was a member of Crew I flying in a Privateer as well.  PS: Al Fletcher died in 1974 in a private plane crash. I am currently lobbying to get him in the pro-rodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs. He was a professional rodeo cowboy when war broke out in 1942.

Max Kitch, son of Leroy Kitch (106) - My late VPB-106 member father, ART1, Leroy B. Kitch, died April 2012, from Pulmonary Fibrosis. I have been working on his "still being negotiated" VA benefit package. I have been trying to associate his malady with the many times he was sprayed with DDT while on the flight line in Iwo Jima, Tinian, and the Philippines while working on the planes. I am curious if other squadron mates have had similar maladies. Do you have any database or knowledge of such? Has there been any common thread for many of the passings of the pilots and crews of the VPB squadrons, such as cancers, lung issues, and such?  I would appreciate any education in this matter.  (If anyone has any information for Max, please contact him via email:  firewood@prodigy.net)

TIDBITS

j Project Recover is a partnership among researchers at the University of Delaware's College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment; the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego; and the nonprofit BentProp Project.  Project Recover was loosely established in 2012 with support from the Office of Naval Research, then formalized in 2016 with outside funds.  To date, the team has identified 30 U.S. aircraft associated with servicemen listed as missing in action in the Pacific and European theatres in World War II.  The group communicates its findings to the Pentagon agency that tracks missing servicemen.  More than 70,000 U.S. service members from World War II remain unaccounted for.   One of their recent findings off of Papua New Guinea was a US Army Air Force B-24 (nicknamed ‘Heaven Can Wait’) from the 5th Air Force 90th Bombardment Group, also known as the Jolly Rogers.  Project Recover will be searching possible wreckage sites in Europe and the Aleutian Islands.

k The memorabilia from Squadrons 102/14 and 106 are archived in San Diego at the San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park.
